Aluminum tanning of hide powder and skin pieces under microwave irradiation / Yue Liu in JOURNAL OF LEATHER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, Vol. 2 (Année 2020)
[article]
Titre : Aluminum tanning of hide powder and skin pieces under microwave irradiation Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Yue Liu, Auteur ; Bin Song, Auteur ; Jinwei Zhang, Auteur ; Carmen Gaidau, Auteur ; Haibin Gu, Auteur Année de publication : 2020 Article en page(s) : 13 p. Note générale : Bibliogr.

Tannage Résumé : The application and mechanism study of microwave irradiation in traditional industries have attracted considerable attention owing to the unique thermal and athermal effects that could lead to unexpected benefits in high-efficiency and clean production. Herein, we report the investigation of the aluminum tanning under microwave irradiation upon using hide powder and skin pieces, respectively, as simulants of real hide or skin. The aluminum tanning process and the tanned products under microwave heating (MWH) were studied and compared with those of conventional water bath heating (WBH) as the controls. For the tanning system of hide powder, the tanning effluents were analyzed in terms of pH, conductivity, dielectric constant and aluminum content, and the tanned powder was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and FT-IR spectroscopy. For the skin piece system, the pH and aluminum content of tanning effluents were also determined, and at the same time, DSC, TG, SEM, FT-IR and shrinkage temperature were used to illustrate the actions of microwaves on the structure and properties of the tanned pieces. The results show that aluminum reactivity in the penetration and binding process of collagen fibers in hide powder and skin pieces improved using microwave treatment. The residual aluminum content was greatly reduced by microwave heating action, and the increased amount of aluminum with evener distribution was observed in the tanned products. Microwave irradiation also resulted in the tanned products with better thermal stability and thermal decomposition resistance. This work further promotes application of microwave treatments for aluminum-based tanning in leather industry. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Genipin is a naturally occurring iridoid compound, it is widely used as an ideal biological protein crosslinking agent due to its low toxicity compared to glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde. Under alkaline condition, genipin could undergo ring-opening polymerization via nucleophilic attack of hydroxyl ions followed by an aldol condensation. Because of the fact that polygenipin could create long-range intermolecular crosslinking between protein chains, preliminary investigations have been carried out to study effect of polygenipin crosslinking on color and thermal stability of hide powder by using colorimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results show that the peak denaturation temperature (Tp) for hide powders obtained from DSC increased to a maximum and then decreased with increasing of the molecular weight of polygenipin. Degree of crosslinking was evaluated, and the results suggest that thermal stability of hide powder is influenced not only by degree of crosslinking, but also by the type of crosslinking. Thermogravimetric analysis also confirms that long-range intermolecular crosslink bridges formed between collagen molecules results in more thermally stable hide powders. This study suggests that polygenipin can be potentially useful in producing eco-friendly leather. Terres raresIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The mechanism of the combination tannage of a rare earth (Ce) bound with tannic acid is described in the paper. Based on the potentiometric titration in aqueous solution of Ce, Gallic acid (Ga) and Glycyl Glycine (GG), we found that that the formation constant of the complex CeGa increased with increasing temp, from 9°C to 30°C, lgkCeGa rose from 11.55 to 11.92, while the formation constant of complex CeGG decreased with increasing temperature, from 6.35 to 3.08.
Complex CeGa and mixed ligand complexes CeGaGG in the solid state display a stronger resistance to thermal decomposition than uncombined CeCl3, Ga and GG. When reacting Ce(III) and tannic acid with hide powder or modified hide powder either together or separately, it was found that Ce coordinated on tannins, while tannic acid combined with collagen, and this manner of combination played a important role in the combination tannage.
Based on these studies, the paper proposed the concept “Poly--Strut Firm Structure” to explain the synergistic effect in rare earth-vegetable tannins combination tannage.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Chemicals and instruments - Stability of rare earth complexes - RE action with hide powder or modified hide powder - RE+T action with hide powder or modified hide powder - RE+T action with other groups of protein

We fabricated samples 13y a lyophilization technique utilizing the corresponding hide powder fibre (HPF). The oil sorption capacity, sorption saturation time, and retention capacity of prepared sorbents were studied. The results showed that oil sorption capacity of PDMS-modified HPF for silicone oil and vegetable (rape) oil were 6.98 and 5.58g/g, respectively. This sample exhibited the highest oil sorption capacity. The resuits suggest that with appropriate pore size, high porosity and low apparent surface energy, collagen fibre based sorbent would demonstrate favourable oil sorption characteristics and is very promising for ail cleanup application.
