Index. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Formulators use particles to enhance the functionality of existing polymer matrices for adhesive and sealant products. Fumed silica is commonly used as a rheology control additive to provide sag resistance, anti-settling of fillers and shear-thinning viscosity. The generic term “fumed silica” defines a range of products with different surface chemistries—from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. These products have differing compatibility to polymer systems, which enable formulators to fine-tune rheology performance.
At the same time, formulators can enhance the viscoelastic response of films or the material properties of cured systems by controlling particle-particle interactions and particle–matrix interfacial adhesion. Such interactions can provide a means of securely incorporating hard materials, which lengthen fracture paths, and dissipate energy at interfacial junctions.1 These properties strengthen films and solids.
In addition to the well-documented benefits in rheology control, fumed silica also enhances the strength of cured adhesives. Following are three examples where fumed silica provides reinforcement of a polymer, resulting in a higher performing adhesive or sealant.Note de contenu : - Transparent silyl-terminated polymer

SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The trend to rationalise paint production has led to a widespread use of a "universal colorant". A tinting system for a wide range of shades will be able to respond to the majority of user's requirements, reducing at the same time expensive and unwanted stock.
Nowadays, universal colorants are offered that meet the high quality standards of modern surface coatings. In order to obtain optimal results, it is necessary that the universal colorants are totally compatible with aqueous as well as with non aqueous paint system and remain stable upon storage. But even the best of these colorants may require some modification of paint base in order to obtain the satisfactory tinting. Otherwise, they would show problems of colour developments. When the tint bases are properly formulated, these colorants can be used for inplant shading, in retail outlets and in small batch operations that use dispensing colorant machines, thereby producing paints with a great variety of shades for the end user, with minimal inventory cost.Note de contenu : - Background

TannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : An approach of utilizing tannery solid waste was developed by using untanned solid waste as raw material to prepare a dry strength additive for papermaking. Cationic derivatives of collagen hydrolysate (C-CHs) were prepared by incorporating (2,3-epoxypropyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride into collagen hydrolysates with different molecular weights. C-CHs were employed in sheet formation for enhancing physical properties of hand-sheets, and the results indicated that C-CHs were useful in tap water and white water to improve the tensile strength and folding endurance of the hand-sheets. This should be due to the fact that C-CHs with cationic moieties are prone to be retained in anionic cellulose fibers, which is beneficial for the formation hydrogen bonds among hydroxyl groups in the cellulose fibers. Framework for such a modification, which particularly employs the blending of different grades of epoxy resins and water-soluble hardeners, introduction of polymer modifiers and functional additives, is analyzed in terms of colloid behavior of these paints, focusing on the main steps of self-emulsifying technology : resin/hardener co-emulsification, induction period, in-pot life and film-forming process.
