Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An acrylic fatty acid derivative (AcFAD) was evaluated as comonomer for promotion of oxidative cure in waterborne latexes. AcFAD was polymerized by solvent homopolymerization and copolymerization and by emulsion copolymerization, and the final products characterized. In the two polymerization processes, NMR analyses confirmed that the reaction occurred involving both the terminal acrylic double bond and the conjugated double bonds of the aliphatic chain. Compared with a reference acrylic latex, the results obtained after AcFAD incorporation showed a time-dependent increase in gel content and in solvent resistance of dry films. These were ascribed to oxidative cure and consequent self-crosslinking of the acrylic polymer, involving the conjugated double bonds in AcFAD side chains. Oxidative cure was also confirmed by FTIR analyses. In addition, reduction in minimum film-forming temperature evidenced that AcFAD has an internal plasticization effect during film formation. Incorporation of this comonomer in acrylic paint binder formulations constitutes a promising alternative to the use of volatile coalescing agents. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : 1. Materials

Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The scratch behavior and resistance of acrylic-based polyurethane coatings were studied. The effects of fumed silica and polyethylene wax were investigated using an area-contact scratch tip, which can apply a constant load to the coating surfaces at a relatively low stress level. Measurements of the normalized changes in gloss (%Gn) and luminance (%Ln) could be provided as reliable and meaningful methodologies for estimating the scratch resistance and subtle damage to polymeric coating surfaces. A higher gloss-valued coating surface has better scratch resistance. The addition of nano-silica particles provides the increases in hardness, transparency, and resistance to scratch damage for the acrylic-based polyurethane surface, whereas the polyethylene wax contributes to the increases in gloss and smoothness for the coating surface. The surface characteristics observed are responsible for the improved scratch performance of the acrylic-based polyurethane coating surface. Structure chimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The influence of nano-silica doping on the growth behavior and corrosion resistance of γ-APS silane films fabricated by electrochemical-assisted deposition was systematically investigated by reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, contact angle test and neutral salt spray test. Density functional theory calculation was also applied to elaborate the adsorption behavior of γ-APS on low carbon steel surfaces. And meanwhile, the changes of surface coverage and dissolved oxygen reduction in the cathode surface over time were intensively analyzed according to the I–t curve during electrodeposition process. The experimental results revealed that the impedance values of the composite films firstly increased and then decreased with increasing nano-silica concentration, and there was a critical doping concentration about 0.4 g·L−1, under which the obtained γ-APS silane composite films presented high compactness and protective properties. Other results were highly consistent with the electrochemical results. Moreover, the hydroxyl-rich nano-silica was also involved in the chemical reactions that occurred on the metal surfaces, and the influence mechanism was proposed. In this work, the effect of silicon (Si) nanoparticles on the corrosion protection performance of epoxy-coated steel was examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and SECM analysis. The EIS was performed in continuous immersion in 0.1 M NaCl(aq) solution. The addition of Si nanoparticles increased the coating film resistance (R f) and the charge transfer resistance (R ct) of coated steel. SECM mapping and line scan analysis was performed in order to estimate the coating performance with Si nanoparticles in 0.1 M NaCl(aq) solution. SECM results indicated that the tip current at ?0.70 V was decreased by the addition of Si nanoparticles in epoxy film. These results suggested that the dissolved oxygen (DO) was consumed by anodic dissolution of Si nanoparticles. Surface analysis showed that the Si was enriched at the scratched region of the coated steel after a corrosion test. From these results, Si was dissolved as Si n+ and transferred to the scratched area, and then consumed the DO in the solution. Thus, the anodic dissolution of Fe at the scratched area was suppressed by the Si nanoparticles, which implies the sacrificial effect of Si from the coating against the steel corrosion. Hence, it was concluded that the Si nanoparticles had a beneficial effect on enhancing the corrosion resistance of the coated steel.
