Titre : Evaluation of collagen hydrolysate on the performance properties of different wet-white tanned leathers Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Yusuf Dilek, Auteur ; Bahri Basaran, Auteur ; Aykut Sancakli, Auteur ; Behzat Oral Bitlisli, Auteur ; Ali Yorgancioglu, Auteur Année de publication : 2019 Article en page(s) : p. 129-134 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Wet-white (tannage)
ZirconiumIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Tanning with basic chromium sulphate is the most commercially favoured process in the manufacture of a variety of high quality leathers. Environmental restrictions to the disposal of chromium containing solids and effluents, as well as speculations concerning the presence of toxic and carcinogenic chromium(VI) traces in leather products, have already directed the industry towards using alternatives. Wet-white tannages which consist of zirconium (IV) and aluminium (III) salts with high durability and resistance and organic alternatives which use phosphonium, aldehydes and some syntans both types with more eco friendly and biodegradable characteristics seem to be the main options for industry. However, properties like high hydrothermal stability, tensile strength, and thickness cannot be achieved by any alternative single tanning method. In this study, collagen hydrolysates derived from gelatin manufacture were used to improve wet-white leather performance properties through combination with tanning agents comprising zirconium and aluminium salts, phosphonium salts and aldehydes. The result shows that the apparent density, shrinkage temperature, denaturation temperature and strength properties of differently tanned leathers increased with the addition of collagen hydrolysates. SEM analyses show that collagen fibres are dispersed after tanning. Besides, collagen hydrolysates make the fibres loosen and the fullness of leather is increased. Tannage Résumé : Vegetable tannins have been studied over the years with an aim to reduce the pollution load caused by chrome tanning. Although mimosa tannins have been utilized commercially, they are expensive and not readily available. The purpose of this study was to assess the physical properties of leather tanned with banana leaf midribs tannins in order to determine their suitability as vegetable tannins. Selected banana leaf midrib samples were collected from Gikondi village in Mukurweini, Nyeri County, Kenya. They were shade-dried and ground into powder. The skins were processed conventionally using banana leaf midribs tannins of Musa sapientum Linn. and ‘Muraru’ (AA genome), with mimosa as a control. The physical properties of the resultant leathers were determined following the standard IUP methods. It was found that Musa sapenitum Linn, ‘Muraru’ (AA genome) and mimosa-tanned leathers had average shrinkage temperatures of 80.33 ± 0.74°C, 78.67 ± 0.47°C and 81.67 ± 0.94°C, respectively. The properties of the tanned leathers were compared with those of the control-tanned leather. Assessment of the physical properties indicated that the leathers met the minimum recommended values safe for Musa sapentium Linn-tanned leather, which failed at 30,000 flexes. These results indicate that banana leaf midribs can be used as an organic tanning agent source for production of leathers from goatskins.
Résistance au vieillissementIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Industries worldwide, including leather, have had to phase out pigments based on lead, chromium(VI), cadmium etc. due to the toxicity associated with these transition metal ions. Coupled to this phase out is also a need to enhance the functional properties of the otherwise safe pigments, with low use, so as to avoid wastage. In this direction, the use of nano-pigments is slowly coming into vogue. This paper explores the advantages of replacing an otherwise popular brown pigment — the hematite (?-Fe2O3) with nanosized oxides in leather finishing. Any synthesis methodology for nanoparticles is sustainable only when green methods are employed for their synthesis. This work takes adequate care in employing an environmentally friendly methodology based on biocompatible polysaccharide — starch as a template. The advantages of this method, such as the monodisperse character of the oxide, low particle size, ability of the carbon residue from the template to aid easy homogenization of the pigment to the finish formulation have resulted in excellent covering of surface, improved levelness, no overloading of grain, excellent physical properties and ageing resistance.
