It aims at exposing the formulation requirements of certain acrylic resin binder suitable for leather finishing applications. The materials are presented in a manner to benefit both the students studying leather science and technology or leather engineering in tertiary institutions as well as those in the leather industry whose knowledge in this technology is deficient. Students of polymer science and technology will also appreciate the contents of this book as it tries to study the effect acrylic polymer resin in the performance of finished leathers. This book will assist mostly undergraduates in understanding the processes of leather making, formulation of finishing agents, properties and behavior of finished leather. It will also benefit those with little or no technical background in leather processes as well as those who have sophisticated background in science but no experience in the leather industry. RetannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The retanning process plays an important role in optimizing the leather’s colour, levelness, softness, fullness, and hydrophobicity. Polymer retanning agents are important materials for this process. The present study used maleic anhydride modified castor oil (MCO), PEG1000 (polyethylene glycol) and IPDI (isophorone diisocyanate) as main materials to synthesize polyurethane microemulsions (MC-PURs) and employed them to retan chrometanned leathers. The hydroxyl functionality of MCO was investigated by chemical and 1HNMR analysis, and confirmed to be about 2.0. The chemical structures of MCO, prepolymer and MC-PUR were characterized by IR.
The optimized synthesis formulation and polyurethane microemulsion MC-PUR3 for MC-PURs as retanning agent was selected by comparing the properties of retanned leathers, such as softness, fullness, grain tightness, tensile strength, extension at break, depth of shade, waterproof properties et al. Then, MC-PUR3 was characterized by means of DSC, TG/DTG and TEM techniques. SEM microgram of MC-PUR3 retanned leather shows that the fibres are well dispersed.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Materials - Preparation of maleic anhydride modified castor oil (MCO) - Preparation of microemulsions of polyurethane filling retanning agents (MC-PURs) - Determination of molecular weight - H n.m.r. spectroscopy - Purification - FT-IR spectroscopy - Differential scanning spectroscopy - Thermo-gravimetric analysis - Transmission electron microscope analysis - Measurement of final dyebath exhaustion - Physical and waterproofness properties of leathers - Organoleptic properties of the final leathers - Scanning electron microscopic analysis

Tannage -- Aspect de l'environnementIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Dialdehyde starches with different aldehyde content from native corn starch were prepared by sodium periodate oxidation to be used as a tanning agent in leather making. For this purpose, native corn starch was oxidized with sodium metaperiodate in different molar ratios. After oxidation processes, the yields, solubility in water and aldehyde contents of the obtained dialdehyde starches were determined as well as structure characterizations by Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Gel Permeation Chromatography. Evaluating the gel permeation chromatography data, the dialdehyde starch samples which were thought to be in appropriate molecular weight/size to penetrate into skin fibers were selected to be used in the tanning process. Their tanning abilities were evaluated by investigating hydrothermal stabilities, filling and fiber isolation characteristics and physical properties determined by mechanical tests and organoleptically. From the evaluation of the results, it was revealed that sodium metaperiodate oxidized starches which have appropriate molecular weight and adequate aldehyde content has a remarkable tanning effect and can be utilized as a tanning agent with the advantages of not necessitating pickling process which means saving time and simplifying the production but more importantly offering an important advantage from an environmental point of view. Tannage combinéLe tannage combiné se dit des tannages qui allient deux familles ou genre de tannage pour obtenir un résultat additionnant les qualités complémentaires des tannins mis en œuvre par exemple Chrome-Végétal ou Chrome-SynthétiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tanners have long employed combinations of various tanning agents to achieve a variety of leather characteristics. Recent emphasis on reducing waste chromium makes it valuable to re-examinesome of these combination tannages and to introduce other variations to determine their effects on chrome uptake and exhaustion. In this work sides in the lime from a tannery were divided into lots, and each lot was processed using a different tannage. The resulting leathers were analyzed for their physical and aesthetic qualities and for chromic oxide content. Tanning wheel effluent was also analyzed for chromic oxide. Processes and results were compared and some conclusions were reached regarding various tannages as a means of reducing waste chromium.

Tannage Résumé : In order to reduce the oxidation time in oil tannage and to standardize the drumming conditions for optimum tannage, we established an oil tanning process accelerated by oxidation with sodium percarbonate. The oxidation of the oil was confirmed by IR spectra, and the effect of the oxidation conditions on peroxide value of the oil were investigated. The physical properties of the chamois leathers obtained were determined. The results show that a higher peroxide value of 248-278mmol.kg could be maintained at 25°C for 6 hours by addition of 4% sodium percarbonate and 0.3% catalyst with 50% water (percentages on the oil weight) during oxidation. Under these conditions, the oil undergoes a large increase in thenumber of hydroxyl groups and a large decrease in C=C bonds. The chamois leathers obtained had strengths, extensions and water absorption characteristics comparable to those of a conventionally processed leather.
