The author describes testing of single-component coatings for marine applications that offer advantages over multi-component coatings such as eliminating pot-life and mix-ratio concerns while satisfying performance requirements.

SilicatesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new class of silicone has been developed for coatings or as coating additives. Cycloaliphatic silane monomers were prepared and reacted into more easily handled cyclic oligomers. These cyclic oligomers were ring-opened into siloxane polymers. The polymers were functionalized with a variety of groups, including: amino, glycidyl epoxide, cyclohexene epoxide, acrylic, and alkoxysilane. The cycloaliphatic silicones have been designed for a number of different curing conditions: (1) ambient temperature-cure (amino and glycidyl epoxide), (2) cationic ultraviolet (UV)-cure (cyclohexene epoxide), (3) radical UV-cure (acrylic), and (4) moisture-cure (alkoxysilane). The end usages thus far have been focused on silicone coatings; however, usage as coating additives will be a focus for future research. The cycloaliphatic silicone has been UV-cured with mixed sol–gel precursors for usage as aerospace coatings. The cycloaliphatic silicones have also been ambient temperature-cured for release coatings, and have application as anti-fouling coatings. The inherent low surface energy makes the cycloaliphatic silicones prime candidates for surface tension additives. Revêtements en bâtiment:Peinture en bâtimentIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : There is an increasing demand in the construction industry for environmentally friendly building products, as well as requirements for more durable coatings with enhanced performance. New developments and advances in synthesis capabilities provide the market with a myriad of polymers for the vertical elastomeric masonry coatings market. New polymer technology has been developed without the addition of alkyl-phenolethoxylate surfactants, NMP or formaldehyde that enables the formulation of low VOC elastomeric coatings for vertical masonry applications.
Coatings based on the new technology have the ability to withstand high pH environments due to improvements in alkali resistance. The high level of alkali resistance gives the coating the ability to be used as self-priming coating, primer or topcoat.
New elastomeric coatings exhibit excellent water and efflorescence resistance, reducing the lifetime maintenance requirements and costs associated with preparing and recoating. Lower water intake of the coating prevents water penetration into the building structure and enhances wet adhesion of the topcoat at the masonry substrate. Improved water resistance and adhesion properties protect the structure from water damage. High tensile and elongation provides coatings with superior crack resistance when compared to conventional architectural coatings. In addition, improved weathering and resistance to dirt pick-up keep surfaces clean, with a long-lasting, fresh appearance.
This technology is recommended for use in elastomeric primers and topcoats for masonry façades, as well as new/hot, aged or repainted surfaces including exterior walls, concrete, block, brick, stucco, fibre cement and exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS).
Modifications to traditional styrene acrylic and all-acrylic chemistries have been implemented into development of new polymers for elastomeric applications.Note de contenu : - THE CHALLENGE
