Structures multicouchesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Novel kinds of magnetism-driven poly N,N-dimethylacrylamide bilayer intelligent hydrogels with various nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) contents were prepared successfully via one-step insitu free radical polymerization. The bilayer hydrogels possessed high mechanical strength, efficient swelling and steady magnetic response. With the increase of nanofibrillated cellulose content, the crosslinking density of the hydrogels increased, leading to the decrease of swelling rate and increase of mechanical strength and swelling bending degree of hydrogel actuators, respectively. Fe3O4 particles existed tightly on the micropore surfaces of the hydrogels, which built the function base of magnetic response of hydrogel actuators. The addition of Fe3O4 was irrelevant to the variation of crosslinking density. The bilayer structure exhibited high bonding strength. Based on intelligent responsive properties, bilayer hydrogels were designed as soft magnetism-driven actuators, realizing capture and transportation properties and provided material candidates for soft robots. Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Styrene-Butadiene-Block Copolymers - By using living anionic polymerization of rigid styrene and flexible butadiene blocks, it is possible to design SB block copolymers with customized properties. The spectrum of properties ranges from soft and elastic for soft-touch applications, to flexible for film and rigid as well as impact-resistant for transparent injection molded parts. Most applications are currently found in the packaging sector. Revêtements en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The potentiometric titration of carboxylated methyl methacrylate latexes prepared with varying amounts of methacrylic acid showed that only very small amounts of their total acids copolymerized were neutralized at room temperature until the acid level was well above 10%. However, it was found that all the acids copolymerized were completely titrated either in a 50/50 water/ethanol mixture at room temperature or in water at high temperatures near their backbone polymer Tgs, regardless of their acid contents, as predicted from the existing theories on the alkaliswelling of carboxylated latexes. It was also found that these high-temperature alkali-swollen latex particles remained in the swollen state even after they were cooled down to room temperature and became film-forming at much lower temperatures. This discovery led to a new technology coined as a high-temperature water-extended latex technology. This new technology enabled us to develop VOC-free water-extended latexes of high-Tg polymers that would exhibit good film formation at ambient temperature and turn into hard and non-blocking latex films and latex-bound pigmented coatings upon drying. Particularly, when fugitive bases were used for neutralization at high temperatures, the resulting water-extended latexes became hard, non-blocking, and water-resistant binders upon drying.

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In order to improve existing polymeric materials, or to design new polymer-based products, one needs to be able to control the polymeric chains. Historically, ionic living and group transfer polymerisations have allowed the design of polymeric architectures with predictable molecular weights and narrow molecular-weight distributions. However, these methods are difficult to undertake as they demand complex experimental conditions. Recently, living radical polymerisation (LRP) has been reported as an efficient living polymerisation process, based on free radical polymerisation chemistry. The wide range of monomers which have been successfully polymerised, the ease of scaling up a reaction, and the high tolerance to functional groups makes it the most suitable process to obtain well-defined architectures (eg polymers with well-known degrees of polymerisation, molecular-weight distribution, end functionalities, chain architectures and composition). LRP is more cost-effective and easier to manipulate than other existing living polymerisation methods, and is therefore the most viable process for industrial development. This paper presents the recent developments in this technique with potential for use in the surface coatings industry.
