VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Modern automotive basecoat/clearcoat enamels are expected to maintain their attractive appearance over the life of the vehicle with no catastrophic failures such as cracks or delaminations. Ensuring the durability of automotive topcoat requires an understanding of the relationships between exposure conditions, the chemical changes that can occur in the various coating layers, and potential failure modes. This paper reviews those relationships with particular emphasis on the chemistry and mechanisms of coating degradation and stabilization. The key factors that affect topcoat appearance durability are as follows: resistance of clearcoat to acid attack and hydrolysis; intrinsic clearcoat photostability (free radical formation rates); nature of photooxidative pathway in the clearcoat (e.g., chain scission versus crosslink formation); effectveness of hindered amine light stabilizer; permanence of ultraviolet light absorbers; and photostability of basecoat and primer. These factors are discussed in terms of specific coating chemistries. The effects of application variables as well as protocols for evaluating performance are discussed. SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A model is presented for the adsorption of a mixture of an anionic and a nonionic surfactant on latex particles. The model is based on the Langmuir equation for adsorption and the regular solution theory for mixed micelle formation. Good agreement between the experimental data and the calculated adsorption was obtained with a mixture of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE10). The preferential adsorption of the more surface active NPE10 is greatest at the onset of micellization and diminishes as the total surfactant concentration increases. The composition of the mixed surfactant at the surface greatly depends on the total surfactant concentration and on the surface area/solution volume ratio. This is illustrated by the calculated adsorption equilibria at different conditions. Addition of small amounts of organic solvents (e.g., coalescing aids) increases the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of NPE and decreases the cmc of SDS. The decrease in the difference between the cmc values of the two surfactants is paralleled by a reduction in the preferential adsorption of the nonionic surfactant in the presence of a coalescing aid.

TempératureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Both neat and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) filled films of an acrylate latex terpolymer with one percent free acid groups were cast on aluminum foil. Films of varying degrees of adhesion to aluminum were studied by measuring thermally stimulated current (TSC) as a function of temperature, film thickness, and degree of pigment loading. Films with the best adhesion gave the highest values of TSC over a large temperature range and also a large increase in TSC as the films delaminated. Duplicate measurements of TSC versus temperature for the same film gave good reproducibility. TSC curves of the neat polymer films gave a peak near the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the latex. The pigmented polymer films gave a peak about 5°C above the Tg of the latex.
The terminus of the interphase region for the neat polymer was in the range of 250-350 microns. Extrapolation to zero TSC for the filled system gave a pigment volume concentration (PVC) near 38%, which was postulated to be a measure of the critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC).Note de contenu : - RESULTS : Degree of adhesion - Noise - Reproducibility - Current peaks - Film thickness Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=18681

Performance of the coatings changed at different film thicknesses. This has been associated with mechanisms prevalent in each test as well as relative mechanism rates. The coating types were rated as best, intermediate, and poor according to three basic causes of corrosion : water permeability, ion mobility, and wet adhesion/undercutting. This study showed that although a single test cannot adequately compare the corrosion characteristics of a group of coating types, a suitable test method can be selected.
