Results showed that weathering caused an increase in the hardness of impregnated and varnished specimens, while it caused a decrease in the glossiness of specimens. Surfaces became rougher and darker after weathering in comparison with the initial surfaces of wood specimens. Positive values of the chromatic coordinates indicated that the wood surfaces changed from their original colour to a reddish and yellowish colour. The highest colour change was detected in the specimens coated with polyurethane varnish alone. Both copper-based wood preservative treatment and varnish coating improved the surface properties of specimens in comparison with the surface properties observed on specimens coated with varnish alone. In the present work, we succeeded in synthesizing a homogeneous silica layer on titanium dioxide (TiO2) core using moderate time and temperature conditions. The structure of the surface coated pigmentary TiO2 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and EDS. In our research isoelectric point (IEP) of TiO2 was determined, which occurred when the solution pH was ~4. In the meantime, the precipitation of SiO2 on TiO2 surface resulted in the shift of IEP. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis were applied in order to determine differences in surface microstructure. Coating parameters were optimized to attain desired morphology of precipitated Si-hydroxide, which in turn provides improvements in one or more important performance properties such as hiding power efficiency, which was determined by the means of UV–Vis light transmittance. Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Several antistatic nanocomposite hybrid coatings based on epoxy-silane developed by sol–gel method are studied. The hybrid sols are prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of GPTMS and TMOS precursors in the presence of an acid, as catalyst, and EDA as curing agent. Considering their good electrical conductivity, indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles are used as antistatic agents. To improve the distribution/dispersion of ITO nanoparticles in the polymer matrix, the surface of nanoparticles is modified with silane groups (m-ITO). The antistatic properties of the coatings, containing various amounts of m-ITO nanoparticles, are investigated through surface electrical resistivity measurements. FTIR is used to screen the reaction of epoxy groups and the effect of EDA on crosslinking in the hybrid coatings. Morphology, nanoparticle distribution and surface roughness of the coatings are studied through SEM and AFM microscopy techniques. Also, homogeneous distribution of ITO nanoparticles within the polymer matrix is confirmed by EDXA elemental mapping. The cubic shape and nanometric size of the nanoparticles in the hybrid coatings are monitored by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Note de contenu : - Materials
