It was first isolated in 2004 using simple mechanical exfoliation of graphite. Graphene sheets are two-dimensional, one-atom-thick layers of sp2-bonded carbon atoms connected in a hexagonal, honey-comb-like pattern. Graphene has found applications in almost all the areas such as advanced batteries and transistors, solar cells, displays, sensors, and composites. In coatings, graphene by itself as a coating material or as an additive for improving the performance of various coating technologies is an emerging area. Graphene based coating have applications in corrosion resistant coatings, flame retardant coatings, wear/scratch resistant coatings, anti-fouling coatings, pollutant adsorption coatings, anti-septic coatings etc. ej. Besides, graphene-based corrosion protection coatings, the super- hydrophobicity of graphene has also been exploited. Also, there are many possible applications for conductive graphene coatings. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that the addition of rue extract and ginger oleoresin in the silicone matrix increased the thermal stability of the formed films. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis showed that the presence of both antifouling agents increases the velocity of water diffusion into the film, improving contact between marine water and the two products. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms that both antifouling agents were trapped inside the silicone matrix. Bacterial adhesion tests showed that rue extract reduced the adhesion of gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, while ginger oleoresin did not show any significant effect. Optical microscopy images demonstrated that the presence of rue extract slightly increased the film’s porosity without impairing the silicone hydrophobicity, while ginger oleoresin significantly altered the film's morphology (reducing the water contact angle). Finally, the sample containing rue extract showed excellent results against marine fouling after 6 months of immersion in a real marine environment. The polymer containing ginger oleoresin showed satisfactory results against marine fouling ; however, the film showed adhesion failures after 6 months. In this study, compound coatings based on silicone elastomer and various colored glow-in-the-dark phosphor powders were prepared to investigate the initial settlement density and adhesion strength of diatom Navicula sp. on the coatings. It was found that settlement densities on samples with phosphor layers (diatom coverage area on Day 7 was ~30%) were significantly lower than those on samples without phosphor layers (coverage area was ~60%), while both coatings showed similar fouling-release characteristics (~90% of removal at wall shear stress value of 90 Pa). In addition, the phosphor color played an important role in the diatom fouling activities. Those experimental phenomena were partly explained according to surface characteristics and our previous study on the relationship between diatom settlement and light conditions. To sum up, this type of preliminary compound coating could both reduce diatom initial settlement and keep the advantage of fouling release. Note de contenu : - Surface fabrication

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Biofouling is a serious concern for ship owners and is commonly tackled by incorporating biocides such as cuprous oxide in the protective coating. Reducing biocides is desirable from an en¬vironmental and regulatory perspective as well as in terms of preserving valuable resources. A novel structure-modified silica offers a completely new way of formulating more sustainable marine anti-fouling coatings without sacrificing performance. SilanesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Imparting oil and water repellency on surfaces is easily achieved with the use of fluoroalkyl-modified silanes. Whilst perfluoroalkyl-modified silanes exhibit high static and advancing water and oil contact angles, their low receding contact angles mean that water and oil will not readily slide over treated surfaces. However, modified perfluoropolyether (PFPE) silanes, whilst exhibiting high static and advancing water and oil contact angles, also exhibit high receding contact angles, resulting in surfaces where the sliding contact angle is very low. The influence of structure modification of the silane and the perfluoropolyether component are examined along with the organic linking group. Their impact on performance using both the dip coating method and the chemical vapour adsorption method is discussed.
