Further benefits arise when wax coated silicas are produced by co-milling the wax with the silica at temperature in a fluid energy mill. Incorporation of the wax in this manner improves the compatibility of the wax coated silica with other components of the lacquer formulation and influences the initial settling characteristics on the lacquer as well as preventing hard settlements on storage. The paper reviews recent work within the Crossfield Group Research Laboratory in which the effect of co-milling various waxes with silica on such lacquer properties as initial dispersion, settling rates and redispersion characteristics, has been investigated and compared with the properties of the uncoated product. Up to now, water borne epoxy coatings, especially those for use in industrial maintenance, have not performed as well as their solvent borne counterparts. Those water borne epoxy coatings are inferior in various aspects such as corrosion and chemical resistance, flash rusting, and have short pot life. This paper describes the development of a new high molecular weight water borne epoxy resin dispersion and a companion curing containing amine functionality. The water borne epoxy coating offers good performance such as corrosion and chemical resistance, and has low volatile organic content (VOC). It also has long pot life, and is easy to apply in both clear and pigmented formulations.
