EO/PO copolymers can be considered to be polymeric surfactants. Polyacrylic acid of low specular weight (<15.000), condensates of naphtalene sulphonate with formaldehyde and sulfonated styrene/maleic anhydride copolymers are often also included in descriptions of polymerics surfactants. The word polymeric suggests high molecular weight but there is no real justification for calling these materials as such. Although the term olipgomeric would be more appropriate, the word polymeric has now been firmly established. In the present paper, the techniques used for the development of this novel computer program has been explained with illustrations. Using this program, epoxy esters and mutistage alkyds such as water reducible alkyds can also be formulated. The technique provides an explicit connection between the alkyd resin composition and the relevant parameters of the alkyd resin such as oil length, molecular weight, hydroxyl value, alkyd constant P gel, hydroxyl per mole, carboxyl per mol etc. representating the polymer structure. This computer program has been developed using Microsoft's Basic Language Interpreter, thus enabling the user to rapidly manipulate formulations in order to arrive upon the desired properties. In effect, the user can use this program to help himself to formulate resins to his specification. As more and more of the current coating raw materials (including vehicles and solvents) become environmentally unacceptable and are replaced by new high-technology materials that exhibit poorer wetting properties, the proper choice and utilization of dispersants have become critical. It is the purpose of this paper to present an amhoteric dispersant taht has been shown in laboratory evaluations and actual field trials to provide superior pigment and wetting characteristics, while not adversely affecting the important physical properties of the finished coating such as gloss, color, viscosity, jetness, and tint strength.
