Its thickening mechanism can be explained by selective insolubility of the modified urea, which results in a controlled separation of fine, needle-like particles demonstrating strong cohesive interactions. The final result of such interactions is a three-dimensional network which improves the rheological properties. Anti-settling and sag control results, compared to results with conventional additives, will be presented in coatings formulations with various polarities. Formulations containing the modified urea thickener displayed very intense shear-thinning effects and high thixotropy levels. Results with various incorporation methods will be discussed. Recommendations for practical coatings applications will be provided along with detailed information about advantages, usage areas and side-effects. The conventional coatings fails in protecting concrete structures, because they are only capable of accommodating substrate movement associated with normal thermal conditions. They cannot withstand crack development, cyclic crack opening and extremes of temperature conditions. The result is that, such coating cracks and loses its protective power. Once air and acid containing moisture has access to exposed reinforcement bar, considerable damage could occur in leading to concrete deterioration. This paper will focus on an important class of coatings High Build Elastomeric Coatings capable of answering all such substrate movements over long periad of time and over a broad range cf temperatures, thereby providing total concrete protection. Water soluble epoxy resins were synthesised from epoxy resin and maleopimaric acid using different weight ratio. There after, pigmented coating compositions were prepared using water soluble epoxy resins and titanium dioxide as pigment. These coating compositions were characterised and evaluated for mechanical and chemical film properties. The results show that all the coating compositions had good film properties and they may be used as industrial coatings.
