SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Sustainability and safety continue to be major focuses in the cleaning industry, including the segment for antimicrobial products. This segment operates in a complex regulatory landscape that can exacerbate the challenge to formulate an efficient, economic and environmentally friendly product. The European Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) sets rigorous standards regarding active substance approval, product authorisation and efficacy testing. These rules and market restrictions create additional hurdles, but also present opportunities. They stimulate the search for and development of green, safe ingredients to replace more traditional, hazardous biocides.
Produced by naturel fermentation, L(+)-lactic acid is safe to handle and readily biodegradable. This report shows that lactic acid is also an excellent bactericide. Its biocidal performance in combination with surfactants commonly used in cleaners has been tested in accordance with established EN protocols. Some of these surfactants were found to provide an excellent antibacterial synergy with lactic acid. Thus bacterial reduction levels of log 5 can be achieved even under demanding test conditions and using low concentrations of lactic acid. These data underline the potential of lactic acid to offer an efficient alternative to conventional biocides.Note de contenu : - Regulatory background

Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : Alkyd-based paints are experiencing a revival in the coatings industry due to their bio-renewability, cost-effectiveness and overall good performance in many applications. As the industry increases sustainability standards for paint formulations, a hurdle for alkyd coatings remains in the raw materials required to formulate a paint, namely cobalt catalysts and methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO) anti-skinning agents.
These two materials face increasing regulatory changes, which will simultaneously increase the burden on formulators developing label-free paint. MEKO's toxicity makes it challenging for formulators to meet safe exposure limits due to its volatility and additionally, MEKO and cobalt have been classified as carcinogens. In this paper, we discuss non-toxic alternatives to both materials, focusing on the path to reformulation with data demonstrating the performance benefits of Borchers'cobalt and MEKO alternatives.
Background on alkyd coatings : Alkyd-based coatings dry via autoxidation when oxygen reacts with points of unsaturation based on fatty acids in the resin. This process can be prolonged if unaided, so cobalt-based catalysts are utilised as oxidative catalysts to speed the curing of alkyd resins. Since cobalt catalysts are reactive to oxygen, an anti-skinning agent such as MEKO is often required to prevent the paint surface from forming a film (called 'skin').Therefore, many alkyd-based paint formulations are dependent on cobalt for adequate curing and on MEKO for storage stability.Note de contenu : - The regulatory case on cobalt & MEKO

Note de contenu : - Chimie verte ? Impact of human's activities on environment and industrialization etc. are creating hazards on human being, environment and on wild life. In global perspective regulatory bodies, environmentalists and social workers are increasingly advocating requirements to reduce and/or eliminate the use of materials having potential negative impact on the environment or on human health. Though in India regulations are still long way to go in the coating industry, the technological changes are being experienced after the regulations are being enforced and compliance are required. The technological changes in recent past have positively contributed to a sustainable green environment.
In this article, we have analyzed the chronological changes in the regulations related to coating industry and its impact on technological changes, innovation and alternative options from applications and formulation perspective.Note de contenu : - Coating composition and Hazard
