Pigments nacrésIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A novel low-temperature method is described for the direct synthesis of Fe2O3/mica pearlescent pigments with ferric chloride as a precursor and trace Fe(II) as a catalyst which does not require any calcination step. The as-synthesized pigments are characterized in detail by means of different techniques including X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and colorimetry. The influence of various factors on the transformation from Fe(OH)3 coating layer to crystalline hematite coating layer is investigated, respectively. Furthermore, this paper studies several critical technological parameters pertaining to the influences on morphology and color properties of the pigments such as the coating temperature and the pH value. Four types of mica with different particle sizes and different aspect ratios were used. These composites were extruded by a twin-screw extruder and subsequently injection molded, and their mechanical properties, including their tensile, bending, and impact properties were evaluated. The addition of mica to PE/PP/SEBS effectively improved its mechanical properties; the addition of SEBS as a compatibilizer likewise enhanced the mechanical properties compared with those of PE/PP composites without SEBS. The use of larger average particle size and higher aspect ratio mica, such as M-35, M-27, and P-33, effectively increased the tensile and bending properties of the PE/PP/SEBS/mica composites. The morphologies of the composites with an added mica as observed by scanning electron microscopy, showed good dispersion between the matrix polymer and the mica. Pigments nacrésIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : Pearlescent pigment is a type of effect pigment. It is obtained by coating metal oxide on laminar flat surfaces such as natural mica. Different metal oxides are used to prepare pearlescent pigments, such as titanium dioxide, iron oxide, zirconium oxide, chromium oxide etc. Substrate selected can be either natural or synthetic. Between the two, natural mica is widely used substrate to prepare pearlescent pigments. But nowadays synthetic mica and borosilicateglass are also used to prepare pearlescent which provide brilliant sparkling effect. Pearlescent effect is observed as the result of multiple reflection, refraction and diffraction phenomenon. When mica is coated with titanium dioxide, a silver colour pearlescent pigment is obtained. As the thickness of TiO2 coating increases, because of the interference effect the colour changes from silver to yellow to pink to blue to green. The coating of iron oxide on mica results into bronze, copper and wine red colours as the thickness of the coating increases. When mica is coated with titanium dioxide and iron oxide together, a gold colour pearl pigment is obtained. Pearl pigments are available in the various grades depending upon the particle size. Pearlescent pigments are used in paints, plastics, papers, and automotive industry. One must follow some basic guidelines to use pearl pigment in plastics. In contrast to absorption colours, there is a trick in mixing colours to get desired colour in pearl pigment.

Procédés de fabricationIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : Pearlescent pigment, a type of effect pigment, obtained by coating metal oxide on laminar flat surfaces such as natural mica. For pearlescent pigment, muscovite grade mica is preferred. Pearlescent pigment manufacturing is a challenging job as there are many stages invo ved in manufacturing pearlescent pigments. Making pearlescent pigment is not pure chemistry oriented process rather it is physiochemical process. Depending upon the particle size and its distribution of mica powder isolated, different grades of pearlescent pigments are manufactured. Various metal oxides are used to coat mica to get various coloured pearlescent pigments. Incineration of coated mica powder is necessary to obtained good luster pigment. RéflectanceIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : In Effect pigments based on natural mica as well as on synthetically prepared substrates such as Synthetic mica, or Silica, Alumina or Borosilicates (Glass flakes), the surface area/particle size plays a crucial role in tailoring effect pigments with desired properties in cosmetic applications. With two pigment series, Sumicosâ„¢ HG ("high-gloss") Line and Prestige® Glow and Glam Line, we have recently build-up a technology to create new effect pigments that provide better chroma, color purity and sparkle in comparison to the conventional effect pigments. The article describes the science behind creating these effect pigments with improved reflectance.
