Produits naturelsIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : The demand for natural and green beauty products continues to grow, as do consumer expectations for effective results. The trend towards natural ingredients is growing with nature-derived surfactants becoming increasingly more desirable by both the formulator and the end user. This has been a graduai upward trend attributable to several factors, including a desire for sustainability, increased media coverage of the potential health side effects of some ingredients, and the demand for manufacturers to lower their environmental footprint. Natural soapnut extract meets the requirements of a surfactant while providing many additional benefits.
Natural surfactants are carbohydrate-based. They are plant-derived and use renewable resources, are readily biodegradable and do not add to the Earth's CO2 burden. One example is Vivimed's Nisarg Soapnut Extract, a very mild, biodegradable and skin friendly surfactant. Synthetic surfactants can be produced from oleo chemicals such as palm oil and are often called natural, while those derived from petrochemicals are synthetic. These types of surfactants can be harsh in their concentrated form giving rise to skin and scalp irritation.
The type of surfactants formulators use has changed over time. For example traditional Ayurvedic treatments involve ail natural surfactants. As time has progressed formulators have moved more towards synthetic surfactants, however today's consumer is more aware of the irritating potential and environmental impact of synthetic materials and are more readily considering products which use natural surfactants derived from plants. Figure 1 shows how the surfactant trend has progressed from natural to synthetic and is now shirting back towards naturally derived products.Note de contenu : - pH

VerbascosideIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Plants have always been the main source of medicinal ingredients for humans, providing a wide range of valuable biologically active substances. Even nowadays, active ingredients of plant origin are widely used, not only in the pharmaceutical industry, but also for cosmetic and nutritional applications.
Today, despite continuous improvements in plant cultivation and product manufacturing procedures, the required safety, availability and purity standards of plant ingredients cannot be entirely ensured because of the nature of the traditional production process itself. On the other hand, a biotechnological approach using cultures of plant cells could open new avenues in the production of plant ingredients. While plant cell culture biotechnology is well known in the scientific community, it has not yet been fully developed on an industrial scale despite the numerous advantages over conventional methods. As well as being a totally environmental friendly technique, it is able to ensure a high degree of safety, reproducibility and standardisation in the composition of the final product.Note de contenu : - PRODUCTS OF BOTANICAL ORIGIN : ISSUES : Safety - Quality and purity - Availability

PaupièresIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Blepharoplasty (plastic surgery on the eyelids) is the third most practiced form of plastic surgery, after liposuction and breast augmentation, in the world. Each year, around 250,000 people undergo this type of intervention. Beauty of the eye area is therefore the subject of great concern. It can be affected by wrinkles, bags and dark circles, but also sagging of the upper eyelid. Indeed, the alteration of the skin around the eye leads to a sagging of the skin of the eyelid and the formation of a fold similar to a wrinkle. This permanent fold is often unwelcomed by women as, besides its unattractive appearance, it makes both the application of makeup and the hold of makeup applied to the eyelid difficult. Still worse, ptosis of the eyelid leads to upper mobilisation of the muscles of the forehead when looking up and this leads to a temporary and then permanent increase in the wrinkles on the forehead.' For the first time in the history of cosmetic actives, Sederma laboratories have developed an ingredient capable of embellishing the overall eye area and targeting specifically drooping eyelids. We will show here how this cosmetic active of natural origin commercially named Beautifeye works and why it has been recognised with the Best New Ingredient Award received during the last C&T R&D Awards Asia in October 2013. Tanins végétauxIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : The cosmetics industry is in the midst of a significant shift, driven by consumer demand for both natural and sustainable ingredients. This transformation is accelerated by concerns on conventional components like UV filters, known for potential environmental degradation and endocrine disruption. Despite the urgency, natural UV-absorbing alternatives based on chemical light absorption remain scarce. Secondary plant substances (SPS), particularly water-soluble tannins, present a promising possibility. This study investigated the reducing capacities, antioxidant activity, tannin contents, and UV-absorption properties of various plant-based extracts mainly obtained from by-products and residues from the agricultural and food industry. By utilizing side-streams, emerging ingredients are potential factors to contribute to the sustainability of cosmetics. The results revealed that bark and tea grounds exhibited the highest reducing capacities and antioxidant activities, making them potential natural sources. Fruit peels, however, showed relatively low antioxidant capacities. Tannin contents varied significantly among the samples, with wine pomace and bark having the highest levels. The UV-absorption measurements indicated that the extracts had the ability to block UV-A and even some visible light, except for fruit peels and nut shell extracts, which were less suitable for UV protection. These findings provide valuable insights into the properties and potential applications of these natural extracts. Note de contenu : - Plant extracts in cosmetics : sustainable efficacy
