Surfactants -- SynthèseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : As consumer awareness of the products and chemicals they use rises, many chemical companies are also striving to become more environmentally responsible. The trend in the coatings industry is toward low/zero VOC products, and many innovations in coatings technology are based on sustainable or green chemistries. The market increasingly demands the use of renewable ingredients to reduce the carbon footprint, and many chemical and coating manufacturers are striving to become more environmentally responsible. This trend is driven by a number of factors, including evolving consumer perceptions and awareness regarding the products and chemicals they use, regulatory/certification bodies and programs such as USDA BioPreferred®, and the growing implementation of corporate sustainability initiatives. Bio-based ethylene oxide (EO) will meet this demand by enabling the synthesis of various ethoxylated surfactants and emulsifiers which are 100% bio-based.
Ethoxylation is a common process used to generate a range of products for emulsification and wetting, including ethoxylated alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters. While the hydrophobic portions of many of these surfactants are already naturally sourced from plant oils, only petrochemical-derived EO has been available in North America until this time. With the production of bio-based EO in the near future, ethoxylated products can now be produced from 100% bio-based content, allowing customers to choose fully renewable products without sacrificing performance. In addition, by incorporation into synthetic base materials, the bio-based content can be significantly increased, allowing formulators to meet challenging new targets.Note de contenu : - Surfactant fundamentals

Tannage Résumé : Vegetable tanned leathers with good embossing, air permeability, natural look and pleasing firm handle properties have applied in many goods with multiple uses. However, the performances of vegetable tanned leathers still need a further improvement. In this work, a kind of nonionic gemini aliphatic polyurethane surfactants (GPUs) with different hydrophobic chain lengths as a retanning agent combined with polyacrylic acid (PAA) for condensed tannin tanned leathers to improve their performances. The effects of the alone or combined use of the PAA and GPU, the hydrophobic chain length of GPU, and the offer percentage of retanning agent were studied by evaluating the organoleptic properties, shrinkage temperature, mechanical properties of the obtained leathers. The best performance was found in the leather retanned with PAA and 12-GPU-550 complex retanning agent, and the mechanical properties of leather could be improved when the total offer percentage was controlled at 4 wt%. Moreover, the collagen fibers morphologies and lightfastness properties of leathers retanned with different retanning agents were investigated. The results showed that the total color difference ΔE and the yellowness index Δb decreased significantly with the introduction of 12-GPU-550, and the leather retanned with PAA and 12-GPU-550 complex retanning agent showed the lowest value of ΔE, demonstrating that the lightfastness properties were improved significantly. Therefore, it was an attractive way to combine use of PAA and 12-GPU-550 as complex retanning agent, which can improve the mechanical and lightfastness properties of vegetable tanned leathers simultaneously. Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : A series of hyperbranched polymer surfactants (HBP-C8, HBP-C12 and HBP-C16) were synthesized by the reaction between hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched polymers (HBP) and fatty acyl chloride. The structure of obtained hyperbranched polymer surfactant was characterized by FTIR, NMR and GPC. The results showed that the products have amphiphilic structure. The thermal property of the hyperbranched polymer surfactant investigated by DSC and TGA was strongly influenced by the length of end alkyl chain. Surface activity of hyperbranched polymer surfactant was analyzed by surface tension method and UV spectrophotometry, respectively. The results showed that hyperbranched polymer surfactant took on better surface activity, which can effectively reduce the surface tension of the water. The hyperbranched polymer surfactant has a lower critical micelle concentration (CMC) and displays single molecular micellar properties, which can package small hydrophilic molecules in relatively low concentration.

However, applications of renewable polymers are significantly behind petroleum-derived polymers, partially because of relative high cost and limitations in the monomers from renewable resources is essential. Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : Three novel dialkyl disulfonate gemini surfactants (Cn-6-Cn, n = 6, 8, 12; n is carbon number of hydrophobic chain) were synthesized from cyanuric chloride, aliphatic amine and taurine. The chemical structures of the prepared compounds were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR spectra and ESI-MS. Their critical micelle concentrations (CMC) in the aqueous solutions at 25°C were determined by surface-tension method. With the increasing length of the hydrophobic carbon chain, the values of their CMC decreased. The surface tension measurements of Cn-6-Cn give low CMC, great efficiency in lowering the surface tension, and strong adsorption at air–water interface. In addition, adsorption and micellization behavior of Cn-6-Cn were estimated by the parameter of pC20, the minimum average area per surfactant molecule (Amin).
