Tannage Résumé : Vegetable tanned leathers with good embossing, air permeability, natural look and pleasing firm handle properties have applied in many goods with multiple uses. However, the performances of vegetable tanned leathers still need a further improvement. In this work, a kind of nonionic gemini aliphatic polyurethane surfactants (GPUs) with different hydrophobic chain lengths as a retanning agent combined with polyacrylic acid (PAA) for condensed tannin tanned leathers to improve their performances. The effects of the alone or combined use of the PAA and GPU, the hydrophobic chain length of GPU, and the offer percentage of retanning agent were studied by evaluating the organoleptic properties, shrinkage temperature, mechanical properties of the obtained leathers. The best performance was found in the leather retanned with PAA and 12-GPU-550 complex retanning agent, and the mechanical properties of leather could be improved when the total offer percentage was controlled at 4 wt%. Moreover, the collagen fibers morphologies and lightfastness properties of leathers retanned with different retanning agents were investigated. The results showed that the total color difference ΔE and the yellowness index Δb decreased significantly with the introduction of 12-GPU-550, and the leather retanned with PAA and 12-GPU-550 complex retanning agent showed the lowest value of ΔE, demonstrating that the lightfastness properties were improved significantly. Therefore, it was an attractive way to combine use of PAA and 12-GPU-550 as complex retanning agent, which can improve the mechanical and lightfastness properties of vegetable tanned leathers simultaneously. Tannage Résumé : A kind of Y-shaped amphiphilic block polyurethane copolymers (PUGs) with different molecular weights were successfully synthesized to be used as retanning agent combined with polyacrylic acid (PAA) for modified glutaraldehyde tanned goatskin. The structures of resulting products were characterized by FTIR, and the molecular weights of products were measured with GPC. The application performances were investigated by measuring the organoleptic and physical mechanical properties of resulting leathers according to the alone or combined use of PUG and PAA, the molecular weight of PUG, and the offer percentage of retanning agent. The best performance was found in the leather retanned by PUG750 and PAA complex retanning agent at the total offer percentage of 4 wt%. Finally, the free formaldehyde contents in the leathers retanned with 4 wt% PUG750 and PAA at different pH conditions were analyzed with acetyl acetone colorimetric method. The mechanical properties as well as the fibers morphologies of the experimental and control groups were also investigated. The results demonstrated that when the pH value at the later stage of retanning process was controlled at 4.0 or 3.0, the free formaldehyde content was significantly reduced by 20.3% or 38% respectively ; and the physical mechanical properties of leathers were also very excellent to meet the performance requirements of goatskin garment leathers. According to these results, the method for using PUG and PAA as a complex retanning agent might be a good choice in chrome-free tanning process. In this work, a series of nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants (Fn-Fn, where n = 2, 4, or 6) were successfully prepared and used as fatliquoring auxiliaries in the fatliquoring process of chrome-tanned goat skin. The chemical structure of these nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants was characterized by FTIR and the molecular weight was determined by GPC. The surface tension measurement results revealed that these three fluorinated surfactants showed excellent surface activities. The effect of type and dosage of Fn-Fn as well as fatliquoring temperature on fatliquoring properties of chrome-tanned goat skin were estimated by the softness and physical mechanical properties characteristic of resultant leather. The results revealed that the leather treated with 1 wt% F4-F4 at the fatliquoring temperature of 40oC showed the best overall performance, whose softness and physical mechanical properties were improved significantly. Moreover, the collagen fiber morphology and waterproof performance of leather treated with Fn-Fn were also investigated which showed that the addition of Fn-Fn in the fatliquoring process could promote the loosening of collagen fibers while effectively enhancing the water repellency of the leather surface. Therefore, such types of nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants are promising to be as desired fatliquoring auxiliaries in the leather industry. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Acrylic resin (AR) is one of the most commonly used leather retanning agents owing to its excellent selective filling property and low cost. However, there are some defects affecting the quality of wet-blue leather in the practical application of AR, such as “excessive convergence”, “detanning”, and “fading”. Herein, the nonionic short fluorocarbon chain surfactants (F6-m) combined with AR for retanning wet-blue goat leather to further improve the application properties of AR. In a series of comparative experiments, the grain surface state and mechanical properties of leather retanned with 4 wt% AR and 2wt% F6-400 are preferred. Moreover, after dyeing, the dye adsorption rate and a* (red-greenness) value of AR/F6-400 retanned leather are higher than that of leather retanned with AR alone. The above issues reveal that F6-400 can improve application properties of AR in the retanning of wet-blue leather to a certain extent, benefiting to further upgrade the quality of leather.
Index. décimale : 541.33 Chimie physique - Chimie des surfaces (Phénomènes superficiels) Résumé : Mixing hydrocarbon surfactants with fluorocarbon surfactants is still an important strategy to improve the economic benefits and performances of fluorocarbon surfactants and expand their range of application. Herein, we prepared a novel kind of hydrocarbon-fluorocarbon surfactant mixtures via mixing a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), with a tri-block nonionic short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant (F9EG13F9) in aqueous solution. The results showed that adding a small CTAB amount to F9EG13F9 (the molar fraction of CTAB in the mixture (x1) was 0.2) could greatly reduce its critical micelle concentrations (cmc) from 0.408 mmol/L to 0.191 mmol/L. At this x1, the contact angle of the mixture was the minimum (57.7 °) at 100 s on polytetrafluoroethylene film, which was even lower than that of F9EG13F9. Besides, CTAB/F9EG13F9 mixtures possessed better colloidal stability and solubilization ability toward hydrophobic dye (Sudan І) than F9EG13F9. The outstanding performances of binary surfactant mixtures benefited from the non-ideal mixing and strong synergistic effect evidence that CTAB/F9EG13F9 surfactant mixtures could be used in practical applications instead of individual F9EG13F9, thereby reducing the used cost of F9EG13F9.
