Polyaniline salts were prepared by oxidative polymerization in the solutions of inorganic (hydrochloric, phosphoric, and sulfuric) and organic (p-toluenesulfonic and 5-sulfosalicylic) acids. Polyaniline salts were characterized by thermal analysis and spectroscopic methods. Electrical conductivity was also measured by the van der Pauw method, and the molecular weight of the polyaniline was determined by gel permeation chromatography. Furthermore, the particle size of the solid salts was measured, and the morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Subsequently, the parameters required to formulate pigmented organic coatings, i.e., density and critical pigment volume concentration were determined. A soybean oil-based fast drying alkyd resin of medium oil length was used as the binder for the organic coating material. Organic coatings containing the polyaniline salts at pigment volume concentrations 0%, 1%, 5%, 10%, and 15% were formulated and subjected to a standard accelerated cyclic corrosion tests. The organic coatings (paint films) were also subjected to mechanical tests and to the electrochemical test by potentiodynamic polarization studies.

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The objective of this work was to compare the anticorrosion effects of organic coatings containing zinc metal consisting of either lamellar particles or isometric particles and to reduce the zinc metal content of the coatings while preserving their high anticorrosion efficiency. The optimization and Zn metal content reduction can be achieved using zinc with a lamellar particle shape and application of conductive polymers. Conductive polymers are expected to enhance the electrochemical effect of zinc metal in paints. Organic coatings with lamellar zinc particles also exhibit better mechanical properties. Optimization of the amount of zinc lamellar particles could promote a wider use of this material in anticorrosion paints. The conductive polymers used in this work included polyaniline phosphate, polyaniline benzoate, and carbonized polyaniline. A solvent-based epoxy–ester resin served as the binder. Model paints consisting of this resin and containing different concentrations of polyaniline phosphate, polyaniline benzoate, and carbonized polyaniline were prepared. The paints were tested at the critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC) of Zn dust and at lower Zn dust concentrations, specifically 2% below the CPVC. The paints containing combinations of zinc and a conductive polymer contained the sum of the pigments just below the CPVC of the zinc dust species used. This implies a level of 39% of (PVCZn-lam) for the systems with lamellar zinc and a level of 61% of (PVCZn–sf) for the systems with spherical zinc. The pigment volume concentration (PVC) of the conductive polymers in the zinc-containing paints was (based on results obtained previously) 1%, 5%, and 10% in the systems with lamellar zinc and 1%, 5%, 10%, and 15% in the systems with spherical zinc. The organic coatings were subjected to accelerated cyclic corrosion tests and electrochemical measurements. The sample containing polyaniline carbonate (PVC = 1%) and spherical zinc exhibited a significantly lower corrosion rate as compared to that of uncoated steel. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Organically modified Na-montmorillonite (MMT) samples were prepared by co-intercalation of octadecylamine (ODA) and stearic acid (STA) using a low-temperature melting procedure A blend of MMT and ODA (with the ratio 1 : 0.5) was stirred for one minute at 80°C in a laboratory mixer and then different amount of STA (weight ratios of MMT + ODA : STA = 1 : 0.3 and 1 : 1) were added and stirred for another five minutes. The resulting mixture was annealed at the same temperature for one hour. X-ray diffraction (XRD) powder patterns of two co-intercalated samples contain a non-regular set of d spacings of basal diffractions. The first basal diffraction with d = 4.8 nm probably gives evidence for prevalent bilayer molecular arrangement in the interlayer and the non-regular set of d spacings of basal diffractions indicates possible mixed-layer interstratification and/or disorder in the bilayer arrangement of the interlayer space. The set of basal diffractions in the XRD patterns of co-intercalated samples significantly differs from the set of basal diffractions in the patterns of the samples intercalated by only ODA or STA. XRD patterns of Na-montmorillonite sample intercalated with ODA (in the ratio of MMT : ODA = 1 : 0.5) and with STA (in the ratio of MMT : STA = 1 : 1) contain broadening peaks. Polypropylene (PP) nanocomposite samples were prepared by mixing MMT modified in the described mode into the PP matrix. To improve the PP affinity to intercalated MMT, maleic anhydride modified PP as a compatibilizer was used. The level of PP nanocomposites exfoliation was evaluated by XRD technique. The influence of the nanofiller on mechanical properties was measured by tensile tests, and an improvement of mechanical properties was noticed.
