Modern life is constantly challenged by the presence of micro organisms and their associated potential dangers. Consumers are increasingly aware of the need for a hygienic life style, particularly in light of recent MRSA scares in hospitals. There is very apparent with the significant increase in the range of antimicrobial products now available in the market. Other market sectors have been influenced as they strive to provide anti-microbial properties fot their products. This has been successfully introduced in the plastics industry for example in the Far East where nano silver particles have been used for electronic domestic appliances. Companies are looking to transfer this success to related markets with a number of trials already ongoing for hygienic coating applications in Europe. The excellent anti-microbial properties of silver are already widely know in the medical profession. Catheters are the most common source of infection in hospitals, however this risk can be significantly reduced by applying silver to these devices. This is obviously very expensive and would not be commercially viable for coatings in hospitals. However nano silver particles offer a solution, due to their large surface area only low concentrations are required to effectively kill the bacteria. This offers the coatings industry a cost effective way to take advantage of the existing high profile of silver in the medical profession. This could be expanded into other areas requiring hygienic coatings for example food processing plants, restaurants, schools and public buildings.Note de contenu : - Review of anti-microbial products

The measuring results reveal that nowadays modern water-dilutable epoxy systems allow thick-film and dimensionally-stable, low-shrink coatings. It has been shown that the formulation largely influences the result. However, the formulator is easily able to achieve the expected results for coatings by means of a new modified curing agent. It has to be emphasised that practice-oriented values are attainable even at - for aqueous systems unfavourable temperature conditions of 8°C and increased atmospheric moisture. This way, the demands raised by the user for practical, thick-film protective coatings are fulfiled. The same applies to legal and ecological demands for the solvent and VOC-content of the formulation.Note de contenu : - Causes of shrinkage
