The main source of raw material for the Ethiopian tanning industry comes from sheep, goat and cattle. Since the Ethiopian leather industry is booming, the industry is now looking to exploit the alternative raw materials available in the country. Camel (Camelus dromedarius) is one of the most important livestock in the East African countries. Due to lack of awareness and technology, most of the hides are not utilized fully by the tanners. Hence an attempt has been made in the present study to exploit the camel hides as an alternative source of raw material for the growing Ethiopian leather industry. Histological analysis of the camel hide has been carried out at different stages of processing. Based on the histological understanding, the strategy for making suitable leather from camel hide was established. The raw material has also been characterized for fat, nitrogen and collagen content. The raw material has been converted into finished leather by using suitable tanning methodology and the leathers were utilized for the preparation of different types of end products. Finished leathers have been developed and the physical and chemical properties have also been evaluated. The results obtained from the chemical and physical tests revealed that the raw material is suitable for the manufacture of upper leather.

Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : One of the most important properties that can be added to leather-based products is its ability to self-clean as leather cannot be washed frequently like fabrics. A simple and direct method to achieve this is to introduce a hydrophobic coating on the top of the leather, which can minimize the adhesion of foreign particles and thereby improve stain resistance. Additionally, this also increases the economic, aesthetic and functional values of the material. Generally, a hydrophobic surface on the leather is created by coating a polymer based on fluorine or silicone, which has the tendency to repel the water droplets. In this paper, the effect of hydrophobic coating on the physical properties of the leathers was studied. It was observed that the hydrophobic coating had a positive effect on the rub fastness properties improving the rating of 3 to 4. Water vapor permeability of the FCP-A alone coated leather reduced from 8.7 to 4.4 mg/cm2/hr in comparison to crust leather, owing to the sealing of pores on the grain surface due to the film formed by these polymers. However, incorporation of bentonite clay improved the water vapor permeability of the leathers from 3.4 to 12.9% in comparison to that of the FCP-A alone coated leathers owing to the pores created in the finish film. In addition, the contact angle of the leather surface was also increased from 98° to 121° due to the introduction of roughness induced by the clay particles. Hence, the proposed work can aid in the development of easy-care and smart leathers. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Dyeing is an important process in the leather industry. It is well known that many of the dyes used do not exhaust completely and this causes concern, as the biotreatability of the unexhausted dyes in effluent is normally difficult. Environmental concern demands the improvement of the exhaustion of dye. To achieve increased uptake of dye, an eco-friendly dyeing process is designed using enzymes. The effect of varying conditions of enzymatic treatment on the exhaustion of the dye, levelness of the dyeing, shade brightness and color intensity have been studied and the conditions optimized. The improvement in dye exhaustion is accomplished using extremely low amounts of enzymes in the presence of other post tanning auxiliaries at optimized pH, temperature and running time. The change in shades obtained is quantified by reflectance measurements and compared with the visual assessment data. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed an opened up and cleaned fiber matrix with enzymatic treatment. The bulk properties viz., softness and grain smoothness are found to be marginally improved in the enzyme treated leathers. The strength properties are not significantly altered by the use of enzymes in the post tanning process.
