Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Chrome recycling, or to be more specific, the recycling of chrome tanning liquors, is not a new concept. As long as 45 years ago chrome was being reused in tannery in Leeds, England. In the days of paddle chrome tanning, it was a common pratice to reuse the exhaust chrome liquor strengthened with the necessary salt, acid, and chrome before adding the pickled or even bated stock. As wa approach our present-day situation we can reflect on the development and pratice of chrome recycling as mainly an economic option. Considerable savings were achieved. Today the tanning industry must consider chrome recycling necessary step in the leather-making process regardless of what the proposed EPA standards will be, because we known they will be strict. Tanneries that must adopt chrome recycling today may not enjoy the savings that tanneries have in the past, when it was adopted mainly for economic reasons. When Gebhardt-Vogel undertook chrome recycling in April of 1975, it was purely an economic decision. We, like the rest of the tanning community in Milwaukee, were sheltered from the concerns of our environment by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District, an agency that satisfactorily treated the industrial community's effluent and processed the sludge into a marketable fertilizer called Milorganite. Testing of the chrome recycle system continued until september, when it was adopted as part of the tanning process. Before I continue I want you to understand that I have been employed by Gebhardt-Vogel for little more than a year, so I am merely sharing with you the results of months of hard work on the part of Ed Schendel, our vice president of production , and Howard Siegman, our plant superintendent. They are the ones who spent their evenings collecting exhaust chrome in 50-gal barrels to make this program a success from the standpoint of both leather quality and economics, and they should be recognized for it. Degree of sulfation of the oils and type of mordant used, however, had significant effects on physical properties. Penetration of oil into the kidney location was affected by type of fatliquor used, degree of sulfation and type of mordant used; and the amount of oil taken up by the leather was influenced by neutralization level. The dressings included tannery sludges from both bovine and sheepskin production, a proprietary fertilizer manufactured from chrome leather scrzp, a sewage-plant sludge containing appreciable amounts of Cr III, and precipitated Cr III hydroxide. The progress of the various crops was minotored and their fruit, leaves, roots, etc., were analysed for Cr III, as applicable. Although some of the mixtures were beneficial to plant growth, these effects could not be attributed to the presence of Cr III, but the results fully confirmed the nontoxicity of Cr III, at least at a level of 500 mg/kg in the soil. The concentration of Cr III in the soil had a negligible effect on the uptake of Cr III by the edible portions of the crops. Tannage Résumé : A tannery-scale trial of the sulfite acetic acid method for short-term preservation of hides developed at our laboratory was carried out at the Seton Leather tannery. Fresh, washed, fleshed hides (4,500 lb) were treated in a wooden tannery drum and fresh, washed, unfleshed hides were treated in a lined hide processor in two runs (10,750 and 15,000 lb).
The hides were stored in containers that were lightly covered with plastic for three days at ambient temperatures of approximately 70°F. Microbial counts carried out on samples cut from the hides showed that microbial control was maintained. Hides from the forst two tests were processed into shoe upper leather of good quality, but of slightly lower weight than normal production. Washing and addition of alkali before the hides were unhaired and limed corrected this condition in the third test. Control of the odor of sulfur dioxide is necessary for the adoption and practical use of this method of preservation.Note de contenu : - Drum test

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : As an extension of the functionality of the microwave ovens currently in use for moisture determinations, a reasonably quick microwave method of analysis for salt content of cured hide samples has been developed. In addition to its use for sample preparation, the microwave oven can also be used to determine salt content quickly and easily by means of a very inexpensive and dependable instrument, the Dicromat Salt Analyzer. Sufficient data are not yet available to make a statistical evaluation of the analytical values obtained by this new method as opposed to the more traditional muffle furnace ashing method, but on individual samples the results appear to be very closely correlated. Tannage Résumé : Chromium can be recovered from wet-blue offal trimmings and shavings with substantial saving in chemicals by incineration at 600°C for 5 hr. Pretreating the offal with 0.5 M Na2CO3 and air-drying prior to incineration produced CrO4(2-). The ash obtained by simply incinerating the offal, without pretreatment, contained water-insoluble Cr2O3, which was purified by leaching with water. Chromium and crude protein were extracted efficiently from offal using 5 percent NaIO3, 5 percent H2SO4, and 3 percent NaCl at 40°C. This procedure was effective but expensive. Leather satisfactory as to odor, appearance, and shrinkage temperature was made with chromium recovered from wet-blue offal by incineration and by extraction. Chromium conservation is possible by recycling chromium liquors and by precipitating the chromium from spent tanning liquors before they are combined with other tannery wastes. If the wastes are combined first, other contaminants are introduced that make chromium recovery and reuse difficult. Leaching sludges with H2SO4 produced marginal chemical cost gains. Leather tanned with these solutions had satisfactory shrinkage temperature, but the sludge odors and iron contamination were objectionable. Note de contenu : - Material balance data for offal

Chang, Auteur ; Joseph E. Cooper, Auteur Année de publication : 1981 Article en page(s) : p. 204-215 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : An aerobic fixed-film pilot plant designed to treat high-strenght waste was evaluated for treating beamhouse effluent. Its main advantage is a low space requirement compared to other aerobic systems. Its major drawback is that it must be supplied with oxygen rather than air for full efficiency.
The reactor consisted of a 6-in. ID, 8-ft-high column containing a bed of sand granules approximately 3 ft high. The waste was circulated into the column at a rate of flow that expanded the sand bed only a few inches. The aerobic organisms formed a film on the sand particles. As the density of the combined organisms ans sand grains decreased, the particles became suspended in the circulating fluid in the column. The contents of the column were recycled into a second column containing oxygen under pressure. Dissolved oxygen levels between 5 and 30 ppm were maintained in the system.
Influent was added to the recycling contents of the column at a rate of 1 gal/hr. Column loading rates were changed by increasing or decreasing the strenght of the waste added. Reduction of COD increased as the recycle rate increased from 2.75 to 4.75 gal/min. At the maximum moading rate, 1,300 lb/1,000 cu ft/day, COD removals of over 72 percent were obtained. Kjeldahl nitrogen removal varied, but was generally between 50 and 75 percent. Less than 20 percent of this removal was accounted for as nitrite or nitrate present in the effluent. Sulfide removal was over 98 percent regardless of the concentration in the influent. It is assumed that the sulfide was oxidized to sulfate.Note de contenu : - Start-up - Standard conditions

Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The reasons for investigating chrome-free tannages are discussed, the main one being the increasing problem of the disposal of chrome-containing effluents. Various chrome-free tannages are reviewed and the history of combination vegetable/aluminium (i.e., semi-alum) tannages is discussed. A promising semi-alum tannage known as the Mimosal-Al process is the main topic of the paper. The process consists of a low mimosa pretannage, followed by a basic aluminium sulfate retannage, giving a boil-proof leather with a kind handle and good dyeing, buffing, and printing properties.
The theory of the Mimosa-Al process is discussed and it is postulated that aluminium ions form complexes with the already bound mimosa tannins and so give stable crosslinking. The development of the process is also outlined and it is shown that the optimum levels of mimosa extract and aluminium are offers of 15 percent mimosa and 6.5 percent aluminium sulfate, on the limed weight. A typical Mimosa-Al process is given and various important aspects of the process are discussed.Note de contenu : - Theory of Mimosa-Al

Sheepskins are thinner than cattlehides and their structure is more open. Thus, graft polymerization techniques that were highly effective on sheepskins gave poor stratigraphic polymer distribution in cattlehides. Poor polymer distribution appeared as a sandwich effect with polymer restricted to shallow layers near each surface. Good polymer distribution more nearly resembled a fatliquored skin in that polymer was present throughout the skin, but in lesser amounts in the midcorium than at at the grain and flesh surfaces. Study of the factor affecting the rate and completeness of persulfate ion penetration into sides in the blue led to means of greatly improving the polymer distribution. The depth of penetration by persulfate ion, visually determined when starch/iodide solution was applied to cut edges of the treated chrome stock, depended upon the concentration of the persulfate ion and length of treatment. This absorbed ion was not readily extractable with water and could be used in a separate step as part of the redox couple to initiate the graft polymerization. The stratigraphic distribution of the polymer in the products was determined in stained sections examined by light microscopy. Chemical analyses were used to determine the total and bound polymer content of the grafted leathers. Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Materials - Histological methods - Chemical analysis

Tannage Résumé : Waste waters from leather tanning operations contain sludge consisting of hair, lime, protein, calcium sulfate, chromium, salt, etc., derived from various stages of processing. Typically waste water and sludge run to an equilization tank where the sludge mixture settles and supernatant water overflows to a municipal sewer. Periodically, settled sludge is removed and taken to a landfill for disposal. In some plants in the United States, the hair is removed by screening at the dehairing step. Then the hair-free sludge in the equilization tank is dewatered (sometimes by a belt filter) to about 25 to 30 percent solids. The dewatered sludge is then taken to a landfill for disposal.
Disposal of chromium-bearing sludges to landfills is now unacceptable because of environmental concerns. It is also a waste of valuable chromium resource.
Gahagan Associates, Inc., have arranged for the installation of a novel system of dehydrating tannery waste sludge by pulse-jet driers. The prototype drier, located on a floating barge in Vancouver, B.C., is being used in an attempt to particulate and dry a variety of sludges by means of high intensity sound waves and hot combustion gases generated by valveless pulse-jet engines. Tests of the system were made : to determine if the sludge could be dried, to determine the nature and quality of the dried tannery wastes, to estimate the thermal energy required for evaporation of water; and to determine the quantity and composition of gaseous emissions and liquid discharges.

Tannage Résumé : The object of retannage has changed markedly as a result the still-growing trend towards full grain leather with aniline character. Since finishes with only a slight covering effect are preferred for this kind of leather, not only the fulness, softness, and tightness of grain, but also the fineness of grain, the dyeing properties, and the lightfastness must be regulated via the retanning process. This increased significance of retannage is further accentuated by the fact that the rapidly changing trends of fashion involve not only the shade, but to a rising extent also the handle properties and grain pattern. In order to obtain the properties required, modern leathers must usually be aftertreated more intensively than corrected grain side leather, i.e., with regard to both the quantity of the products and the processing time required.
Some of the properties desirred, such as softness, fineness of grain, and good dyeing behavior, can be obtained by retannage with mineral tanning agents, especially chrome or synthetic. Both methods, however, are limited to the processing of light, thin leathers which are to be varied only in their handle, but not excessively filled. Moreover, purely chrome-tanned leathers are unsuitable for the rapid drying methods usually employed nowadays.
Although the filling effect which some of the individual classes of tanning agents and vegetable tannins, there are often limits set for the application of a filling combination retannage. the use of chrome tanning agents has to be reduced to a minimum in many countries for ecological reasons, and the use of vegetable tannins has to be kept as low as possible because of the high requirements imposed on the fineness of grain or the lightfastness of the leather. If the use of chrome tanning agents is excluded from the retanning process, it is difficult to obtain leathers that are soft and nevertheless have a springy feel, while it is also difficult to retain the fulness and fine grain obtainable by the incorporation of vegetable tannins. This is all the more so, since nowadays also rawstock of relatively poor substance has to be utilized in an optimum way.Note de contenu : - REPLACEMENT TANS FOR CHROME AND VEGETABLE TANNING AGENTS : Resin tanning atents - Retanning agents based on synthetic polymers - Use of polymeric neutralizing agents

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : When spent chrome liquor is recycled to the tanning bath, it must be supplemented with additional chrome to bring its concentration uo to that required for tanning. After an increase of 20 to 70 percent from the level of the first-run spent liquor, the ions of sodium, sulfate, and magnesium in the spent liquor reach equilibrium in the first three or four runs of tanning. These findings agree with results previously reported. The authors have made it clear by cation exchange chromatography, paper electrophoresis, and gel filtration, that recycling the spent chrome liquor does not essentially affect its chrome complex composition. However, they conclude that the recycling of self-basifying chrome agent requires more careful control of the tanning process, because its chrome complex composition alters rapidly with time after dissolution and because the hide is highly selective in its sorption of the chrome during tanning. Tannage Résumé : Since the discovery of chromium as a tanning agent, there have been hundreds of publications discussing mechanisms of chrome tanning. Because of the emphasis on effluent control and the rising cost of chrome as a primary material, current work has centered on improving the efficiency of chrome tanning and on recycling (or reuse) of chrome. We have discovered a chemical which, when used in the primary chrome tanning step, apparently improves the penetration and distribution of chrome whithin the leather. This paper describes process variables and results which show that a significant reduction in chrome charged can be realized while maintaining chrome content in the leather and reducing the chrome content of exhaust liquors. Other benefits of the new process based on tannery trials are described. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Tanning process - Measurements

Tannage Résumé : Tannery wastes contain high concentrations of ammonia and organic nitrogen which constitute a significant oxygen demand on receiving waters. Also, ammonia in the un-ionized form is extremely toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. By converting the ammonia and organic nitrogen to nitrates through biological oxidation ( nitrification ) the oxygen demand and the toxicity can be reduced significantly or eliminated completely. The nitrifying bacteria are extremely sensitive to environmental conditions and careful control of nitrification systems is required. The wastes from tanneries employing the vegetable tanning process normally contain high concentrations of tannins as well as ammonia and organic nitrogen. This study was conducted for the purpose of determining if quebracho inhibits nitrification and at what concentration inhibition becomes significant. The results obtained showed that the efficienty of nitrification was reduced at all concentrations of quebracho in the influent above 100 mg/l ( quebracho in the influent ). The maximum reduction in nitrification efficiency was observed to be about 30 percent. The quebracho concentrations investigated ranged from zero to 500mg/l. At 500mg/l the observed reduction of ammonia was 93 percent. The authors believe that the reduction in nitrification was caused largely by the adverse effect of the quebracho on the clarification efficiency rather than by a direct toxic effect on the nitrifying organisms. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Previous studies showing that gaseous sulfur dioxide can be used to preserve freshly flayed hides for at least 28 days have been continued. The advantages of this preservation procedure are that it reduces dissolved salt pollution in tannery effluents and requires no water or agitation. In this study, the effect of time of exposure to various concentrations of sulfur dioxide based on the hide weight was examined. Hide samples exposed to approximately 0.33, 0.5, and 0.66 percent sulfur dioxide from 0.5 hr to 20 hr and stored at 86F were adequately preserved for 3 to 28 days and in some cases up to 17+ weeks. Preservation was judged by microbial counts, 1-hr gelatin film test, and observation. Unfleshed cowhides that were exposed to 0.66 percent sulfur dioxide for 3 and 6 hr were preserved for 14 and 21 days, respectively, and produced acceptable leather when tanned in a commercial tannery. Factors that are important to the preservation of fresh hides with this gas are discussed.
