Résumé : |
Several plant-based alternatives to fossil fuel-based (meth)acrylate monomers are described. Both exterior wood finishes and furniture finishes using binders containing 40% plant-derived carbon showed performance at least equal to that of the fossil-based control formulations. |
Note de contenu : |
- Technical background and commercial status
- Plant substitution in (meth)acrylates
- Itaconic acid : promising, but with some problems
- Crotonic and malonic acid esteres : opposing problems
- One further potential option is not yet available
- Self-crosslinking exterior finishes perform well
- Interior furniture coatings are also satisfactory
- Higher bio-derived content should soon be possible
- FIGURES : 1. General structure of monomers that can be useful in radical polymerisation - 2. Structure of D-methylene butyrolactone
- TABLES : 1. Clear and pigmented formulations for exterior coatings based on self-crosslinking binders - 2. Comparison of properties of exterior wood coatings containing binders made from only fossil fuel-based monomers or from partially plant-based monomers - 3. Clear formulation for interior 2K NCD curing coatings. Properties of the crosslinked coatings are presented - 4. Film properties of 2K isocyanate crosslinking interior furniture coatings containing binders made from only fossil fuel-based monomers or partially plant-based monomers |
