Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The coating dynamics of a drying paint film with a yield stress is studied. The liquid is modeled as a binary mixture with one volatile component, solvent, and one nonvolatile component, resin. When the solvent has a different surface tension than the resin, solvent evaporation can lead to the creation of surface tension gradients which can potentially overcome the yield stress and dramatically affect the flow history. Using the lubrication approximations to derive the flux of the liquid film parallel to the substrate, we find that the presence of the yield stress causes several distinct flow regimes. The total flux of each of these regimes is summed, and using the continuity equation we derive an evolution equation giving the height of the free surface as a function of the distance along the substrate and time. The resulting equations are discretized and solved numerically using finite differences. High order derivative is treated implicitly, allowing for large time steps and reducing the computational requirements. We find that the presence of a yield stress greatly affects the leveling behavior of the coating. Critical yield stresses exist that can cause maximal leveling of the coating film. Tension superficielle
ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The surface tension of a water/detergent mixture and a visco-elastic waterborne paint sample were measured using the classical ring method in which a thin free liquid film (lamella) is formed between the ring and the parent liquid. Lamella tension was measured during the stretching of the lamella. Measurements of water/surfactant mixtures have shown essentially classical behavior of lamella tension (independence of tension on deformation). Measurements of a waterborne paint formulation, however, have shown that after stretching of the lamella, the lamella tension decreases. The lamella tension of the paint sample increases after contraction of the lamella. Comparison of experimental results with rheological properties of the paint have shown that bulk visco-elastic properties of liquid are found in both the bulk sample and the lamella. The conclusion is that for the study of surface properties of visco-elastic liquids such as waterborne paints, the applicability of classical methods is limited. Therefore, it was necessary to develop new methods and approaches to study the properties of these materials. These methods are described in this paper.

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In cast polyamides, the catalyst is retained and remains active, causing the material to degrade during processing in the molten state. To preserve the high-value properties of the material after recycling, specific additives are required. Trials show that it is possible to produce high-viscosity polyamides that can find future use in, for example, thermoforming. Note de contenu : - Characteristics of cast polyamide

The intersection of the storage and loss modulus curves of a thermoplastic permits analysis of its average molecular weight.
