Tannage Résumé : A novel natural coloured waterborne polyurethane (PU) based on valonia tannin was successfully synthesised and characterised. A structural study of the polymer by Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the incorporation of valonia tannin into the backbone of the PU. The dispersion of valonia tannin and homogeneity of surface of the PU samples were confirmed by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis. Chromaticity and colour difference further verified the colour depth and uniformity of the cured films. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicated that the synthesised PU samples exhibited an improved thermal decomposition temperature. Particle size analysis, mechanical testing and water absorption of the synthesised PU samples further showed the effect of the cross-linked structure in the molecular chain segment. Moreover, the colour fastness and folding [flexing] resistance of the leather coating finished with synthesised PU was better than that of valonia tannin blending. The modification was achieved by crosslinking the hydroxyl group of PSil and ethoxy group of PU in the presence of di-n-butyltin dilaurate. The chemical structure of PU was analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared and Hydrogen-1 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopic methods. A series of modified silicone resins (MSRs) have been synthesized and investigated. The molecular weights of the resins were determined by means of gel permeation chromatography. The morphology of the MSR studied by scanning electron microscopy has shown that the resin containing 30% of PU has a small particle size and a good particle size distribution. The adhesion and the mechanical properties of the resins containing 20, 30, and 40% of PU have shown a good performance. Using thermogravimetric analysis, the thermal properties and the thermal degradation of the MSR were investigated.

First, 72 novel hydroxyalkyl carbamate and dihydroxyalkyl carbamate-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) oligomers and their carbamate-linked block copolymers with poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) were synthesized using a high-throughput synthesis system. These PDMS oligomers and block copolymers were characterized for their molecular weight using high-throughput Gel Permeation Chromatography (Rapid-GPC). The 72 oligomers were then incorporated into siloxane-polyurethane formulations at four different levels resulting in 288 coatings. After initial screening of these 288 coatings, eight coatings were selected for further characterization. Differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and surface energy analysis demonstrate the presence of PDMS on the surface with a polyurethane underlayer. Pseudo-barnacle adhesion and the attachment strength of reattached live barnacles (Balanus amphitrite) were in good agreement. Out of the eight coatings that were down-selected, two coatings performed well in algal (Ulva), bacterial (Cytophaga lytica, Halomonas pacifica), and barnacle (Balanus amphitrite) laboratory screening assays and are potential candidates for ocean testing. The results showed that ADI/HDI hybrid isocyanurate could be prepared with 2-hydroxypropyl-trimethyl-azanium catalyst at reaction temperatures between 50°C and 70°C. Both the GC and 1H NMR analyses identified a favorable linear relationship between the feed ratio of the starting monomers and the amount of each individual isocyanate incorporated into the oligomer (reaction ratio). Compared to coatings prepared from the mixture of ADI isocyanurate and HDI isocyanurate, the coatings from ADI/HDI hybrid isocyanurate possess higher distinctness of image.

The chemical structure of the synthesized adduct was confirmed by FTIR analysis. Furthermore, such adduct was emulsified in water using stearic acid/triethanol amine system. Moreover, the emulsion was examined as a water-repellent as well as an antibacterial finish for cotton/polyester fabric. The results indicated that the emulsion treated fabric acquires water repellency, softness, stiffness, and antibacterial properties. In addition, the surface of the aforementioned treated fabric was characterized via scanning electron microscopy.
