Modern life is constantly challenged by the presence of micro organisms and their associated potential dangers. Consumers are increasingly aware of the need for a hygienic life style, particularly in light of recent MRSA scares in hospitals. There is very apparent with the significant increase in the range of antimicrobial products now available in the market. Other market sectors have been influenced as they strive to provide anti-microbial properties fot their products. This has been successfully introduced in the plastics industry for example in the Far East where nano silver particles have been used for electronic domestic appliances. Companies are looking to transfer this success to related markets with a number of trials already ongoing for hygienic coating applications in Europe. The excellent anti-microbial properties of silver are already widely know in the medical profession. Catheters are the most common source of infection in hospitals, however this risk can be significantly reduced by applying silver to these devices. This is obviously very expensive and would not be commercially viable for coatings in hospitals. However nano silver particles offer a solution, due to their large surface area only low concentrations are required to effectively kill the bacteria. This offers the coatings industry a cost effective way to take advantage of the existing high profile of silver in the medical profession. This could be expanded into other areas requiring hygienic coatings for example food processing plants, restaurants, schools and public buildings.Note de contenu : - Review of anti-microbial products

The (3-mercaptopropyl) tris[2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxy] silane (MPTMEES) functionalized Cr3C2 was encapsulated with graphene oxide (GO) as an efficient nanofiller in the epoxy matrix (EP). The silanized chromium carbide wrapped in graphene oxide was tested by SEM/EDX and TGA. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) were used to study the protective performance of epoxy coating on steel in the presence of varying weight percentages of graphene oxide wrapped silanized chromium carbide in seawater. After 1 h of immersion, the coating resistance of EP-MPTMEES/Cr3C2 was determined to be over 43% higher than that of pure matrix. After 240 h in seawater, EIS tests revealed that EP-GO/MPTMEES-Cr3C2 nanocomposite coatings had a higher coating resistance (6340 kΩ.cm2) than ordinary epoxy (1.2 kΩ.cm2) coatings. Because of the coated substrate’s improved resistance to anodic dissipation, the least dissipation of ferrous ions was found at the crack of the EP-GO/MPTMEES-Cr3C2 nanocomposite coated steel specimen (1.5 I/nA). The silanized Cr3C2 was reinforced in the degradation products, forming an excellent passive layer at the coating/steel contact, according to FE-SEM/EDX analysis. The newly developed EP-GO/MPTMEES-Cr3C2 nanocomposite coating had improved corrosion protection and enhanced hydrophobic characteristics (WCA: 146°), according to the findings. The epoxy matrix with graphene oxide wrapped silanized chromium carbide demonstrated improved adhesive capabilities. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The retanning process is a very important step in the leather manufacturing because it overcomes some of the disadvantages of chrome tannage. For this purpose, two different nano-emulsions of styrene/acylate copolymers were prepared using seed emulsion polymerization technique. The main difference and characteristics of the two copolymer emulsions were studied. In addition, the morphology and the nano-particle size of the copolymer emulsions was proved by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The influence of the prepared copolymer emulsions as retanning agents for chrome tanned leather was also studied. The physico-mechanical properties of the retanned leather, namely, tensile strength, elongation at break and tear strength, were measured. Thermal stability and texture of grain surface and fibers of chrome tanned leather were ewamined using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. All these parameters were the main target of this work and used to evaluate the applicability of the copolymers as efficient retanning agents. The results showed an improvement in the physico-mechanical properties, softness, and firmness of grain as well enhancement in thermal stability upon retanning by the prepared copolymer emulsions. The nanoparticles in these coatings self-organize as the liquid coating dries on the substrate. The self-assembly of the nanoparticles results in the formation of a two-layer dielectric stack composed of alternating high and low refractive index layers. For the first time, using this process, an ultra-low reflectivity film can be inexpensively and simply formed using high refractive index titanium oxide nanoparticles and a low refractive index fluoropolymer. These films can be made scratch or abrasion resistant by the inclusion of silane coupling agents and low refractive index nanoparticles.
Systèmes auto-assemblésIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : We describe novel optical coatings which require either thermal or photocuring to render them mechanically robust and abrasion resistant. These new coatings are low refractive index fluoroelastomer-nanoparticle composites that form a unique nanostructure during drying of the liquid coating. During drying, the nanoparticles in these liquid coatings migrate towards the substrate. The final, 100-nm-thick anti-reflective coatings are novel and exhibit a unique bilayer structure in which the nanoparticles are ordered and segregated towards the substrate. The coatings are rapidly cured using a new process and exhibit surprising “scratch durability” as measured by aggressively testing with steel wool. Sol gel chemistry is used which involves the reaction of the nanoparticles with an acrylic oxysilane to form nanoparticles which are functionalized with sol gel derived oligomers. The functionalized nanoparticles are combined with a fluoroelastomer containing a free radical initiator and multiolefinic crosslinker, and the composite film is rapidly cured by a thermal or UV process at low temperatures. The final product is a mechanically robust, low refractive index anti-reflective film which is useful for displays and photovoltaic devices. These are unique fluoropolymer nanocomposites which utilize nanoparticle self-assembly to enhance important properties.
