It is imperative that this colorant exhibits optimum performance in water-based and solvent-based products. The paper focuses on the effect of varying molecular weight of polycarboxylate-based surfactants on the properties of the aqueous dispersion. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Screening specific concentration of ingredients is a difficult job while formulating a latex paint. It is the composition of binder and various ingredients such as pigments, coalescing agents, thickeners, surfactants, wetting agents, etc. The properties of paint are highly dependent upon the property of binder and its interactions with other ingredients. Rheology is one of the important property for paint, responsible for its performance during manufacture, storage and applications. In this study we discuss the theological interactions of acrylic emulsion (AE) with coalescing agents and associative thickeners to screen these ingredients for the paint formulation. Two hydrophobic coalescing agents and three types of HEUR (hydrophobically modified ethoxylated urethane thickener) and HASE (hydrophobically modified alkali swellahle emulsion thickeners) classified as high, mid and low shear thickener with different concentration are used in this study. Flow curve, 31TT (Three Interval Thixotropy Test), Oscillatory amplitude sweep test (AS) are carried out to study the influence of these ingredients on rheology. She viscosity increases as the concentration of coalescing agent and associative thickener increases. The mechanism of interaction and efficiency of ingredients with acrylic emulsion is discussed. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : During roll coating application of water-based architectural paints, fibers are formed between roller and substrate. These fibers progressively thin and break up into several tiny droplets leading to the wastage of paints. This defect is widely known as spattering. In the current study, the propensity to spatter in fully formulated mid pigment volume concentration water-based architectural paints based on varying the type of thickeners, namely a combination of cellulosic with clay, cellulosic, and hydrophobically modified poly acetal/ketal polyether (HMPAPE), at similar and varying volume solids is investigated. The spatter tendency of paint is qualitatively assessed using ASTM D4707. Also, a new approach to quantify the spread area of spattered droplets is developed by thresholding-based image segmentation using an image processing toolbox of Mathematica. This newly developed quantitative approach will greatly help the formulator to better differentiate between formulations. Rheological tests, namely viscosity curve, amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, and first normal stress difference test, are carried out to unravel the flow and viscoelastic properties of paints in depth. An in-house custom-built fiber drawing device on a contact angle drop shape analyzer instrument is fabricated to study the extensional properties of paints. At the same volume solids, the paint based on a combination of cellulosic with clay thickener spatters the most, while the paint based on HMPAPE thickener spatters the least. This is mainly attributed to the chemistry, molecular weight, and thickening mechanism of thickeners. Eventually, a reliable correlation is established between observed spatter and the frequency-dependent elastic modulus outside the linear viscoelastic range at the same and varying solids for paints based on the different types of thickener. This correlation will help chemists to quickly screen formulations to minimize the spattering during roll coat application, thus saving time, cost, and manpower. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This article elucidates the effect of type of pigment/extenders viz. titanium dioxide (TiO2), magnesium silicate (steatite), calcium carbonate, dolomite, precipitated sodium magnesium aluminosilicates, hydrated and calcined aluminum silicates (kaolin) when used alone or in combination in the paint dispersions on their sedimentation stability. Accelerated heat age stability test was conducted as per ASTM D 1849. Wettability of pigment extenders were measured in terms of their contact angle using Washburn technique. Rheology viscosity curve and oscillatory amplitude sweep test are carried out to depict the structural properties, more precisely the extent of flocculation in the paint dispersion. From rheology viscosity curve, extent of residual flocculation is determined using Asbeck extrapolation method. Extent of total flocculation in the paint dispersion is estimated from cohesive energy density (Ec) using oscillatory amplitude sweep test. Energy of separation of particles in flocs (Esep) is also determined using yield point measurement. Attempt was made to correlate extent of flocculation present in paint dispersion with settling and syneresis observed during accelerated heat age stability test. It is observed that, the paint dispersions based on only TiO2, only hydrous kaolin and only precipitated sodium magnesium aluminosilicates are found to be quite stable whereas the dispersions based on only magnesium silicates and only calcined kaolin are found to be unstable. Paint dispersions based on carbonate extenders show syneresis and soft settling which is easily mixable. From the rheological study, it is identified that Ec is the most crucial parameter that correlates very well with the accelerated heat age stability test results of paint dispersion.
