RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Flow patterns and residence time distributions have been investigated in a transparent laboratory-scale Co-Kneader with a viscous fluid and different combinations of operating conditions. An image analysis technique, already successfully applied in stirred tanks, has been applied here for the first time in a continuous system. The flow visualization results are presented as mixing curves, which show quantitatively the evolution of the macromixing along the Co-Kneader. It has been found that the image analysis technique gives new insight into the mixing mechanism of the Co-Kneader and may be used as a simple experimental method to quantify the degree of backmixing. Residence time distributions have been used to obtain axial dispersion coefficients. A comparison of the cumulative distribution functions between different systems is also presented. Solutions aqueuses (chimie)Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : In this study the extrudate swell of polymer solutions is estimated using the microstructure of polymer molecules. When a flexible polymer chain goes through a narrow die shear stress exerting on the chain will cause the polymer chain to be stretched along the flow direction. After emerging from die all external stresses vanish immediately and the chains tend to recover their previous state due to elastic recovery. This phenomenon will results in a gradual increase in extrudate diameter and this is used as the key idea for estimating swell ratio. A Giesekus based conformational model was used in order to predict polymer chains microstructure everywhere in the domain. The resulting PDE set including, continuity, momentum, and conformational rheological model were solved using a finite volume method with the OpenFOAM software. Numerical results were compared with experimental data which were obtained for aqueous solutions of Carboxymethylcellulose. It was found that model predictions are in good agreement with experimental data. The results were also compared to results which were obtained by the Tanner relation which underestimates experimental data. Note de contenu : - Conformational models

[article]
Titre : Experiments and modelling of calender processing for shear thinning thermoplastics between counter rotating rolls with differential velocities Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Romain Magnier, Auteur ; Jean-François Agassant, Auteur ; P. Bastin, Auteur Année de publication : 2013 Article en page(s) : p. 437-445 Note générale : Bibliogr.

les polyoléfines thermoplastiques semi-cristallines : polyéthylène (PE), polypropylène (PP), polyméthylpentène (PMP), polybutène-1 (PB-1) ;
RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : This paper is concerned with a floor application calendering processing using both a PVC and a Polyolefin formulation within a two roll calender. The rheology of both formulations was measured using the Rheoplast, a specific capillary rheometer. Experiments with various velocity differentials were performed and the roll separating force and the sheet exit temperature were measured for each case. An isothermal model based on the lubrication approximations hypothesis together with a power-law behavior for the molten polymer has been developed. Due to the difference between the rotation velocities of the two cylinders, the problem is no longer symmetric and the integration of the generalized Reynolds equation requires taking into account various velocity profiles. The resulting pressure profile enables computation of the roll separating force. The agreement between the model and experiments performed with the PVC formulation at various velocity differentials is fair; however for the Polyolefin formulation there is a significant difference which means that the model for this new formulation needs to be improved. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Prior literature employed a finite element based fully coupled algorithm that solved the flow/orientation coupling effects in extrusion deposition additive manufacturing, i.e., a key component for identifying the material properties of solidified deposited polymer composites. However, the complex iterative solution protocol reduces the computational capability of the algorithm. This paper simplifies the finite element based fully coupled algorithm by employing a scalar representation of the fourth order orientation tensor affected viscosity tensor. The revised code predicts similar fiber orientation results as compared to a related prior study. With the simplified fully coupled algorithm, effects of material deposition rate and fiber aspect ratio on a 2D planar large area extrusion deposition flow are explored, where the power law rheology model is employed for the flow simulation. Computed results show that an increased material deposition rate reduces the extrudate-swell ratio of the melt front and varies the local fiber orientation of the deposited bead especially near the flow region in contact with the substrate. Higher fiber aspect ratio enhances the principal fiber alignment of the extrusion and deposition flows, where the maximum local difference of the principal A 11 component is 23% with increasing fiber aspect ratio from 10 to 25. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Many processing operations of polymeric materials are dominated by extensional flow. In this paper the question is addressed in which way rheological data obtained from elongational laboratory experiments can be used to describe the material behavior in various processes. Particularly discussed is the uniformity of geometrical features of items with respect to the strain hardening of the polymeric materials, because uniformity is important for many end-use properties. Convincing correlations with extensional rheology could not be established for thermoforming experiments on polypropylene. However, for blown and drawn films it was found that the uniformity of thickness improved, if strain hardening was introduced. The bubble stability could be related to the melt strength of the sample. Furthermore, the influences of elasticity and strain hardening on the neck-in during drawing of films were elucidated. Moreover, it was shown in which way extensional rheology can be used to assess foaming. Note de contenu : - Main features of rheological properties in elongation
