SérigraphieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The reduction of dot gain in half-tone printing is desirable in order to accurately reproduce designs in printed format. An important contribution to dot gain is the spreading of ink on the substrate after image formation but prior to immobilisation by curing or drying. The spreading of a typical screen ink was modelled to determine the thermodynamic processes controlling the rate of drop spreading and the timescales over which they are significant. Suggestions are offered as to the characteristics desirable in polymer substrates in order to minimise dot spreading. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.4 Encres Résumé : In lithographic printing, an ink maker relies heavily on the quality of his varnish, primarily to provide a "vehicle" to transfer and direct the pigment to the substrate. It must be as wise as a "professor," knowing when to emulsify just enough to transfer down an ink train but only adhere to the image area on a printing plate. Then, as polished as a "palace guard," this varnish, after being mixed, pushed and squeezed at various shear rates, must stand tall, dry and be resilient to the elements. Finally, the varnish must also act as a "make-up artist" allowing only the best visual properties to be seen upon presentation to the end use customer. How can a varnish perform all of these tasks ?
The backbone of a good offset varnish consists of strategically selected hard resins chosen due to their economical, structural and compatibiIity attributes they contribute to the final product. Since the polymers are generally solid at ambient temperatures, fully judging the resin's characteristics require dispersion into a fluid medium. The choice of solution formulation has been the basis for many a lively conversation.
The purpose of this paper is to give an ink or varnish maker a useful sketch or "fingerprint" of a prospective resin concentrating on specific properties critical to producing a high quality varnish. This will allow the user to look at a wide range of resins, objectively making relative comparisons using equipment and/or terminology commonly used in this industry.Note de contenu : - ARLO viscosity vs. dilution maps

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Pinholes are a problem for formulators developing fast-drying, water-based coatings, especially in coatings cured at high temperature and applied at high wet film thickness. Pinholes are often caused by air or solvent vapor release from the film when the coating is too viscous to flow back and repair the holes. Pinholes also occur in baked coatings, as the trapped vapor regains mobility when the coating softens under heating, before crosslinking hardens the film, preventing flow back into the voids.
Hydrocarbon-based defoamers help eliminate the foam and pinholes in these formulations, but their limited compatibility results in lower gloss, poor leveling and surface appearance. This paper describes a new additive that combines both deaeration of microfoam and modified surface drying for pinhole elimination. This new additive shows comparable pinhole elimination compared with hydrocarbon-based defoamers, but without compromising formulation compatibility or final coating appearance.Note de contenu : - New additive development
