The organic coatings to efficiently fulfill the dual functions should possess good film is evident, since the failure of the bond between the coating and the substrate nullifies all other properties combined with adequate adhesion to the substrate. The importance of adhesion is evident since the failure of the bond between the coating and the substrate nullifies all other excellent properties that the coating may have. Generally to improve the adhesion of coatings/paints the appropriate amounts of coupling agents (known as adhesion promoters) are incorporated/added in the coating formulations. In the earlier reviews the findings of adhesion promoters as well as promoters other than silanes have been discussed. The present review discloses the findings on the adhesion promoters used for paints/coatings with a special eference to flexible substrates. The general observations on the performance of these promoters are described in a tabular form at the end of the text. This information may serve as guidelines in the selection of adhesion promoters for specific paint/coating' systems. Note de contenu : - Adhesion promoters for different types of paints/coatings

Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Peinture Adhérence Métal Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Paint coatings are used widely to protect metal and non-metal surfaces apart from giving them aesthetic appearance. A protective layer is expected to withstand the varying environmental conditions which cause changes in its structure and eventually lead to its failure in service. Among the prime properties, adhesion of a coating to the substrate is considered to be an important one. It is evident that however excellent the other properties of the paint coating may be, its protective function would not be fulfilled if it does not have adequate adhesion to the substrate. Several factors which contribute to the adhesion of a paint coating are nature of substrate, surface preparation/pretreatment, composition of the resin used as binder, nature of the solvent used, viscosity and applications of the paint and thickness of the coating. The influence of these parameters on adhesion of paint coatings to metal substrate has not been fully established, yet. In an attempt to generate practical information about them, the following aspects have been studied : i) The influence of acid value and hydroxyl value of the resin used as binder. ii) Effect of surface preparation and pretreatment. iii) The variation in adhesion strength with thickness of the paint coating. iv) The level of pigmentation and part replacement of prime pigments by extenders/fillers. v) The bond strength of paint coatings to metal substrates. In the present study the Direct Pull Off Technique was used for measuring the practical adhesion of paint coatings. Note de contenu : - Factors influencing adhesion of coatings to metal substrates

This aspect has been described in earlier papers on the subject. Some techniques other than those reviewed in the previous papers to enhance adhesion are described here. A few methods used for identification and characterization of adhesion promoters have also been discussed. Note de contenu : - Recently developed techniques to enhance adhesion

The most promising and commonly used method to enhance/improve the adhesion of coatings is the use of small amounts of coupling agents in the formulations. Silanes are a group of adhesion promoters. Their functions and findings of research workers have been discussed in an earlier review. In the present review, the findings on the use of promoters other than silanes which are considered as new classes of adhesion promoters, have been discussed. The general observations on the performance of these promoters described in a tabular form may serve as guidelines in selecting the suitable adhesion promoters. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Peinture Adjuvant Adhérence 'Silane organique' 'Article synthèse' Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In practice, paint coatings are used to protect a substrate apart from giving it an aesthetic appearance. The protective layer is expected to withstand the widely varying environmental changes and last longer. the adverse changes in the structure of paint coatings eventually lead to its failure in service. Among the prime properties, adhesion of a coating to the substrate is considered to be the most important one. The addition of an appropriate amount of silanes in the paint formulations helps the coatings to adhere well to the substrate and prevent its adhesion being affected by the environmental conditions. Such chemicals create stronger interfacial interaction between coating and the substrate. The role of Organo silanes, which have been used over last 30 years as coupling agents, primers or additives to promote adhesion of paint/coatings with special reference to epoxy coatings, polyurethanes, vinyl based coatings, alkyds and acrylic coatings etc. is reviewed. General observations on the performance of organo silanes described in the end may serve as guidelines in selecting the silane based adhesion promoters. Note de contenu : - ADHESION PROMOTERS
