Revêtements en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The author discusses new formulation for semi-transparent wood stains that aims to give superior exterior durability.
More restrictive regulatory requirements along with applicators' preference for low odour, safe to handle products, are continuing to drive the adoption of waterborne formulations as opposed to solventborne.
The wood coatings sector is no exception, where performance criteria, such as exterior durability, early water resistance and hardness development are key, whatever the formulation base.
Recent developments in acrylic technology have helped to address increasing demand for more environmentally responsible formulations, with waterborne solutions enabling minimal emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and supporting APEO-free coatings.
However, with tough exposure demands in an exterior environment, acrylic-based wood stains must be capable of withstanding peeling and flaking, phenomena that result from degradation at the wood coating interface.
New developments at Dow, which is increasingly working with 100% acrylics, are designed to address these challenges and deliver against appearance criteria, water resistance and durability demands.Note de contenu : - Key performance requirements

Produits chimiques -- Suppression ou remplacementIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : Looking into the history of anticorrosive pigments (ACO-pigments), the driving innovation factors were always performance and legislation in combination with costs. The toxic behaviour of red lead or chromates already opened the door to non-toxic alternatives 30 years ago. The stepwise ongoing stricter handling of for example the Cr6 ended up in an almost complete ban in Europe for the benefit of all consumers : Chrome-based pigments are SVHCs (substances of very high concern) in the European Union and currently the sunset date for eg Strontiumchromate and Zinctetraoxychromate is set for January 2019 with the possibility to apply for an authorisation until July 2017.
These pigments show an excellent cost/performance ratio. Nevertheless, due to their toxicity, for more than 30 years, alternatives like zinc phosphates have made inroads. Standard products with universel applicability significantly reduced the consumption of chromates, however they did net always reach the required performance due to a different working mechanism. All phosphate pigments have in common the fact that they build an anodic passivation via precipitation of phosphate complex layers in combination with metal hydroxide barriers (see Figure 1), white Crelons additionally act cathodically.
Therefore, standard zinc phosphate has been improved by two major steps : The first step was the modification of standard zinc phosphate changing, for example, pH, solubility, adding synergistic values etc. Second was the introduction of polyphosphates for higher sophisticated applications, such as coil coatings, aircraft primers etc, which can also be supported by the use of silica-based ion-exchange pigments.
All improved products are highly linked to specific binder systems, therefore more universel zinc-containing pigments have been developed as 'wide-spectrum-anticorrosives', combining the different improvement factors into a single pigment or even developing different modifications.Note de contenu : - How to use zinc-containing aco-pigments to achieve a labelling-free paint ?

Revêtements poudre:Peinture poudreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The industrial wood coatings market is estimated at E6.bbn in size and is growing at a compound annual growth rate in excess of two percent. The growth of the market is driven by macro-trends, such as the increased urbanisation and growth of the middle class in Asia, regional increases in population and home ownership, and moves to increase productivity and reduce cost by pre-priming joinery items, such as cladding and windows prior to finishing on construction sites. Competing against these strong growth drivers is the accelerating trend of substitution by alternate substrates most notably, the substitution of décor foils for wood/veneers in furniture and panelling and luxury vinyl tile for flooring ; such technologies have made great strides in their aesthetic performance over the past several years.
The industrial wood market may be broadly split into four key segments of Cabinets, Flooring, Fumiture, and Building Products. Figure 1 shows the values and geographic-splits of these segments.
This article explores some of the latest demands for sustainable coatings and specifically explores the requirements for products which cannot be delivered by fully roll-coated flat line applications where 100% UV technology is clearly recognised as the benchmark for sustainability given the excellent transfer rates, productivity, and zero solvent characteristics of the product.Note de contenu : - Replacement of nitrocellulose lacquers by waterborne coatings

A simple stastitical analysis gives information about the distribution of the thicknesses, grey values and reflectances. It is shown that the results of this statistical analysis can be linked with the intrinsic hiding power and the flow behaviour of the paints, allowing one to quantify the latter. Procédés de fabricationIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Using the example of automotive paint processes, an innovative methodology for appearance measurement based on the approved confocal technology of NanoFocus AG will be presented in this paper.
The methodology allows for the description of the development of the appearance along the entire process chain. It will be shown that this methodology correlates well Wh conventional measurements. Additionally, the effect of different substrate materials and various production sites will be explained.
As the appearance of a coating is a significant quality criterion in automotive manufacturing, applying suitable and high-performance metrology solutions is crucial. Currently, appearance can only be determined at the end of the painting process after the clear coat is applied. In contrast to this, a new optical measurement device allows one to determine the appearance parameters along the entire process chain. It consists of an optical-confocal measurement system developed by NanoFocus AG' combined with an analysis methodology developed by inpro'. Measurement values can be acquired on the sheet material, after the press shop, the body shop and finally after each paint layer.
A correlation between this new technology and classical metrology methods was required in order to gain the acceptance of the automotive industry.Note de contenu : - Measurement device

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Two-component (2K) polyurethane coatings are widely used as the top layer of protective coatings systems to provide performance benefits, such as UV durability, flexibility and chemical resistance. However, these 2K products are coming under increasing scrutiny due to the presence of unreacted isocyanate in the uncured formulation. There have been efforts made ta develop non-isocyanate based coatings however, it is a challenge to do so while providing ail performance benefits of a 2K Polyurethane coating. A new non¬isocyanate moisture curable silylated resin for protective coating applications is discussed in this paper. This resin is targeted to enable the coating formulator ta develop a one¬component (1K) non-isocyanate coating that provides performance on par with the current 2K polyurethane coatings. Some of the key coating properties that were studied and are . discussed herein are UV durability, flexibility, corrosion resistance and chemical resistance.
