In history, skin colour has been associated with a culture or race. Today we know that there are no different races, but that the human skin exists in different colour shades.
With the help of evolutionary research, pigmentation and solar radiation, this article explains important aspects of developing multiculturally oriented cosmetics.
The main reason for the development of dark pigmented skin was the need for protection against solar radiation to prevent folic acid deficiency. The range of pigmentation that can be observed in modem humans today is the product of two opposing tendencies. Dark skin provides sun protection in the vicinity of the equator, while fair skin allows better vitamin D synthesis in regions with lower sun intensity. The article describes other differences accompanying darker or lighter pigmentation, biochemical mechanisms that play a role and skin diseases that occur more or less frequently, For skin care in different geographical regions, climate, UV radiation and the respective sense of beauty in those regions play a role.Note de contenu : - The differences in pigmentation

Vieillissement cutané -- PréventionIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Environmental pollution now-a-days is considered one of the main causes of skin ageing. Among the pollutants, tobacco smoke and PM2.5 (particulate matter) are thought to be the major health hazardous components responsible for skin in-flammation, pigmentation, and wrinkling, as evident from sporadic clinical and epidemiological studies. Our objective was to develop a plant-based natural ingredient that could suppress the detrimental effects of those two pro-minent pollutants on human skin tells. Normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK) and normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) were exposed to PM2.5 and tobacco smoke, respectively, for the induction of inflammation and collagenase activity. Various plant extracts were screened for their efficacy in showing anti-ageing properties against these pollutants. We showed that our unique extract, Ougon, was able to suppress the tobacco smoke-induced expression of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (an enzyme responsible for the degradation of extracellular matrix) in NHDF by inhibiting the expression of CYP1B1 (a member of the cytochrome p450 family). Moreover, Ougon was found to have strong efficacy in inhibiting the PM2.5-induced expression of some inflammatory mediators (e.g. IL-113, IL-6, and IL-8) in NHEK in concentration-dependent manners. Therefore, we suggest that Ougon extract may protect the MMP-1 and inflammation-mediated ageing of skin induced by environmental stress factors.

Soie et constituantsIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Skin protection is a growing concern for societies worldwide. Not only severely damaged and compromised skin requires special care products restoring impaired barrier functionality, but also healthy skin benefits from protection against environmental stress such as increasing pollution and manifold contact of individuals to irritants in everyday Ide. AMSiIk presents an innovative active ingredient, forming a breathable protective film on skin. It is especially suited for products targeting sensitive, irritation-prone, stressed or diseased skin. Silkgel is an innovative hydrogel comprising biotechnologically produced functional silk polypeptides. In vitro as well as in vivo data show that an almost invisible film formed by the application of Silkgel represents an efficient barrier against potentially harmful small molecules, microorganisms and irritants, thereby supporting and enhancing the natural barrier function of skin. In parallel, skin appearance is improved (i. e. soft shine and smoothened surface). The functional silk polypeptides outperform standard ingredients such as ceramides or other skin barrier supporting film formers. The functional silk polypeptides are not animal derived and no animal derived products are used throughout the production process, rendering Silkgel a natural, vegan cosmetic ingredient. Pollution -- Effets physiologiquesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : As environmental contamination continues to be a widespread concern that has deleterious effects for the skin, the new anti-pollution cosmetic product POLLUSHIELDTM functional ingredient has been developed. Its efficacy has been investigated by means of several studies, including: capture of metals, assessment of cell viability in the presence of urban dust, examination of damage in skin expiants exposed to pollution and an in vivo test with Asian volunteers that were exposed to the air of a heavily polluted city. The recently developed ingredient was able to bind to a great amount of metals and protected epidermal cells and skin expiants against pollution. In the clinical test, metals accumulated in the skin diminished and skin antioxidant capacity improved while damage by lipid peroxidation decreased. These results suggest that this anti-pollution ingredient can help present accumulation of particles in the epidermis and replenish the skin with antioxidants, increasing its capacity to resist the harm caused by pollutants.

NeurosciencesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : On this research, an electroencephalography (EEG) profile was performed for a group of emulsions in order to asses pick-up, rub-out and after-feel of several components. EEG readings led to the identification of a positive impact on the frustration of materials used during rub-out (13;0.05), while a group of panelists didn't find significant differences on said parameters for emulsions under assessment (13;0.05). Using the materials identified, two anti-age emulsions were prepared according to the findings from EEG readings regarding material composition ; a perception test was performed also for validation among a group of 30 users of anti-age products, finding several differences that favor the use of materials selected during EEG. Findings from EEG demonstrate how neuroscience can be applied on emulsion development as an innovating tool for cosmetic product formulation in order to receive higher consumer acceptance. Produits naturelsIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : It's not only food that can be vegan — beauty products can be free of animal byproducts too. But what does that really mean for the formulation ? ... At least one answer from KahlWax.
Formulating natural cosmetics, as all cosmetic scientists know, is challenging. Over the years, the number of raw materials that are suitable for natural cosmetics has grown tremendously, enabling the formulation of natural cosmetics with galenic and sensory properties that are more appealing to the consumer than some years ago. It is still very much a challenge, however, especially when taking into account the price of natural formulations, which tend to be more expensive than non-natural formulations. This is probably one of the main reasons why green washing is still such a common phenomenon in the cosmetics
market. More and more cosmetics manufacturers require raw materials that are not just natural, but also vegan, an attribute that was not originally linked with natural origins, but is now expected by consumers. This makes sourcing and formulation even more complicated, especially given that animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax are not easily replaced.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wx6veOLn6hNwUUfFePx0f_3bBen6dIe3/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=26692

Rust spots on textiles arise from bloodspots by decomposition of iron-containing haemoglobin.
Sodium glucoheptonate is not a chelant agent but a sequestrant, and is also a very effective crystal growth and agglomeration inhibitor for metal hydroxides. From the acid up to the strong alkaline range, easily water-soluble oligomers of multivalent metal hydroxides will be formed. This applies to the removal of rust, because oligomeric iron hydroxide [Fe(0H)3]n is sequestrated by sodium glucoheptonate, which is not deposited. Sodium glucoheptonate also applies to other metal hydroxides (e.g., hydroxi¬des of Al, Cu, Mn and Mg). The precipitates that occur with these metals, as a result of hydroxide formation in alkaline cleaning processes, reduce the effectiveness of cleaning by forming spots or re-depositions of released metal hydroxides and lead to turbidities in liquid detergents with high pH-values during product storage.Note de contenu : - Rust and rust spots

SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : Biofilms are highly organised accumulations on interfaces. They can cause serious problems in a range of industrial areas. In the household sector, the formation of biofilms in washing machines and dishwashers can cause hygiene and odour problems, as well as biocorrosion and biofouling. The formation of biofilms in the washing machines is the source of the unpleasant odours that can affect textiles.
At Swissatest, test methods were developed to measure the removal or reduction of biofilms by a screening procedure in a lab-scale test, as well as after a disinfection measure or a washing cycle. After the treatment, the residual quantity of biofilm is measured by the crystal violet assay by Obole (2011), or alternatively by live germ count.
To determine biofilm removal in washing machines, polypropylene ports are used. On their surfaces, a mixed biofilm of three bacterial species (E. roll, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa) is cultivated. By determining the germ counts on the surface of the ports before and after the wash, biofilm removal in one washing cycle or after a cleaning cycle of the machine can be determined. Furthermore, the efficiency of detergents, bleach and additives, as well as the transmission of biofilm germs onto cleaned textiles, can be evaluated. In industry (e.g. paper industry or cooling water systems), biocides are usually applied to combat biofilms by killing the bacteria living in the biofilm, but without removal of biofilm. The addition of dispersant mixtures of non-ionic surfactants that are not themselves biocidal, but physically effective at interfaces, stabilises the surface and delays the formation of biofilms. The biofilm is reduced by being detached and washed away.Note de contenu : - Advantages of controlling biofilms with dispersants
