Titre : Emerging role of the paint industry in improving human health Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Melrina Mascarenhas, Auteur Année de publication : 2001 Article en page(s) : p. 53-57 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : 'Matériau revêtement' Peinture 'Santé publique' Hygiène Antimicrobien 'Revêtement sol' Hôpital Insecticide 'Lutte antipollution air' Pesticide Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : For years the paint industry has been regarded as a polluting industry, with a negative effect on human health. However increasingly, research is being conducted to find ways to utilize coatings to give it an added value benefit of being hygienic in addition to its protective and decorative functions. Hygiene coatings that have anti-microbial properties, find use in a wide variety of applications including hospital paints, floor coatings, air-duct coatings, etc. These coatings have potential for various consumer and commercial applications which include hospitals, food process environments, pharmaceutical industries, public areas as well as private homes. Besides hygiene coatings, there are other paints that contribute positively to human health conditions. These include insecticidal paints, anti-allergenic paints and air-purifying paints. Thus the paint industry has evolved to meet human health requirements by providing products that can improve standards of hygiene in our daily living and working environments. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Scientists are increasingly looking towards nature to provide the key to solvingsome of our technological problems, leading to a newly emerging science termed 'Biomimetics'. Paint technolbgists too are refocusing on natural biological systems to borrow principles and mechanisms from nature and transferring these to conventional paint systems leading to innovative Biomimetic coatings. These coatings mimic the physical, chemical or physiological characteristics of biological systems. Such paints would behave like the natural component when exposed to the same environmental challenges and would have improved performance or novel properties for future industry needs that are not possible with conventional paint systems alone. Biomimetic coatings represent one of the latest developments in paint technology and promises to be an interesting field of study. Note de contenu : - Science of biomimetic coatings

Titre : Novel uses of micro-organisms in the paint industry : A review Titre original : IPA AWARDS - 1999 : Review section : 1st prize winning paper Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Melrina Mascarenhas, Auteur Année de publication : 1999 Article en page(s) : p. 35-40 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : 'Industrie peinture vernis' Biotechnologie Microorganisme 'Epuration eau usée' 'Eau usée industrielle' biologique' 'Déchet industriel' 'Traitement déchets' Adjuvant Antisalissure Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the paint industry, the general emphasis has been on the control of micro-organisms due to their deleterious effects on both raw materials as well as the finished product. However increasingly, research is being conducted to discover ways of exploiting micro-organisms in a positive way. Thus the ability of micro-organisms to tolerate and degrade unwanted, waste products that are often toxic to the environment, is made use ofin biofiltration plants for VOC reduction and emission control. Effluent treatment plants use the same principle to reduce levels of wastes to acceptable standards. Micro-organisms are also capable of synthesizing useful products which may find use as raw materials in the paint field. Thus the production of antifouling agents, industrial polysaccharides, pigments, etc. by micro-organisms offer eco-friendly and cheaper alternatives to chemically produced products without any compromise on the quality of the final product. Moreover the ability to manipulate micro-organisms through genetic engineering opens the road to a host of possibilities in the future, making microbial biotechnology an exciting and interesting field of research.
