Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This paper describes the use of analytical techniques to examine an 18th/19th century vegetable-tanned hebrew parchment manuscript which had been discovered during excavations in Tanta City, Egypt. The manuscript was assessed, moisture content was determined, its pH, amino acid content and shrinkage temperature were measure. The ink was analysized by X-ray diffraction and atomic absorption. The binding medium of the ink and tannin material of the manuscript studied were identified. Biological deterioration was also assessed. The solubility of the ink used on the manuscript was tested. The manuscript was surface cleaned, consolidated, humidified, flattened and lined, disinfection was also applied. The results of the analyses quantified the deterioration and helped in developing a conservation strategy. The conservation treatment improved the appearance and increased the strength of the manuscript. These manuscripts suffer from deterioration because of unsuitable environmental conditions in their previous or current preservation places. This study aims to evaluate the condition of the leather binding of a copied historical manuscript of "The Low of Medicine by Ibn Sina" dated back to 1294 AH - 1877 AD which is preserved in the Al-Azhar Library. Digital microscopy and AutoCad were used to document the aspects of deterioration. The analytical techniques used for the explanation of the deterioration mechanism include the investigation of the surface morphology using digital and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and analysis by Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), pH measurement, and Attenuated Total Reflectance/Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR). The results showed that the common aspects of deterioration were various types of stains, insect holes, detachment, tears, and erosion. The analytical techniques showed that the studied leather binding suffered from adverse deterioration and chemical instability. It also suffers from a decreased pH value, which affects the chemical instability. The presence of some elements, such as calcium, silicon, and iron, indicates the influence of pollution from the various preservation environments in which the manuscript’s binding was preserved. The study recommends providing conservation treatment and preventive conservation for the leather binding of the manuscript studied. Note de contenu : - Materials

ReliureIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : This study focuses on the evaluation and assessment of the condition of a deteriorated illuminated leather binding dated back to the Egyptian Mamluk period (1250-1517 H) at library of Mashiakht El-Azhar, Egypt. Some analytical techniques have been used in order to identify the decorative materials, evaluate the condition, and study deterioration mechanisms of this leather binding. Different microscopes (digital USB, stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-Ray analysis (EDX) were used. Additionally, the analysis by portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) was used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements in the golden layer. Moreover, pH measurement, and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis has been used to explain the chemical deterioration of historical leather and to identify the decorative agents. On the basis of investigation by different microscopes, the golden colour on the surface of historical leather cover has been gilded, and not painted. The results of investigation by microscopy for the illuminated and non-illuminated leather parts showed different signs of deterioration such as different kinds of cracks, holes, missing parts, detachment of some parts in the gold layer, fungal hyphae, accumulated dust, fragility of the gold layer etc. The elemental analysis by EDX and pXRF showed that the golden colour mainly consisted of brass with traces of elemental gold. Additionally, the elemental analysis revealed the presence of elemental sulfur which may be due to the air pollutants in the surrounding environmental conditions at Al-Azhar library, Egypt. The analysis by pH measurement and ATR-FTIR revealed that the leather cover suffered from acid hydrolysis mechanisms. Therefore, conservation procedures (conservation treatment and preventive conservation) are needed in the future work. Tannage Résumé : Leather artifacts are to be found in varied archaeological and historical places (museums, storages, libraries, excavation areas). Improper environmental conditions (such as relative humidity, temperature, excess light, pollution etc.) and poor handling can affect such artifacts and lead to their increased hardness and dryness. This study aims to evaluate castor oil and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as individual materials and as a mixture at different concentrations for the lubrication of vegetable-tanned leathers. Accelerated heat ageing at different temperatures was used.
The analytical techniques used for the evaluation process were digital light microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), change of colour, attenuated total reflection - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation). Investigation of the surface morphology by microscopy proved that a low concentration of castor oil in the mixture gave good fibre distribution and the grain surface pattern was established for the treated and aged treated samples. The colour value and total colour difference of the treated and aged treated samples with a low concentration of castor oil were better than at a high concentration. ATR-FTIR proved that the castor oil and PVP mixture protects leather from deterioration as no free radicals were observed in the spectra. Mechanical property values proved that the use of the lubricant protected leather from accelerated heat ageing. It is recommended that, a mixture of castor oil and PVP with a ratio of 10:90 could be applied for the lubrication of dry vegetable-tanned leather artifacts.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Methods

Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The environmental conditions in Egypt are very different from the conditions required by international standards for storage rooms, display cases etc. These conditions make vegetable-tanned leather artifacts dry, brittle, stiff and weak. Leather artifacts need conservation treatment with lubrication materials from time to time. Although lubrication of leather may in fact be the most viable way of protecting leather in Egyptian collections, such dressings have been avoided, because the use of oils would promote mould growth. This study aims at adding fungicide to wax or oil formulations to control fungal growth and to improve the properties of leather.
Vegetable-tanned leather was treated with oil or wax formulations without and with fungicides. Untreated and treated samples were innoculated with 4 fungal strains (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium funiculosum, Alternaria alternata and Trichoderma viride) which are commonly found in archaeological vegetable-tanned leather artifacts. The samples were assessed visually and by mechanical tests (tensile strength and elongation) plus an investigation of the surface morphology by SEM.
The results showed that vegetable-tanned leather samples treated with lubricants containing fungicides were more resistant to mould infection than the blank samples. However, samples treated with lubricants without fungicide were more resistant than the control sample that had not been treated at all. The index method, which is proposed by the author for the evaluation of mechanical tests is a good tool and can be used to evaluate other properties.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : New vegetable-tanned leather samples - Fungicides used - Lubricant compounds used - Incorporation of fungicides with oil or wax formulations - Application technique of Lubricants - without and with fungicides - Fungal strains - Innoculation of vegetable tanned leather with fungi - Accelerated ageing of the samples
