In XRD, the angle of diffraction of X-ray is measured after allowing X-rays to be incident on the material under testing. The distance between layer of atoms (d) then can be calculated using Bragg's equation. Plot of intensity vs d - value gives XRD spectrum. In XRF, X-rays of high wavelength are emitted by the specimen as a result of transition of electrons between orbitals when bombarded by low wavelength X-rays. XRF spectrum is a plot of intensity as a function of either energy or wavelength. XRD & XRF spectra are characteristics of materials and form the basis of their analysis. In coatings XRD is useful in establishing the identity and determining the purity of pigments. The technique is useful for analysis of polymorphic forms in titanium dioxides (rutile and anatase) and copper phthalocyanines (alpha, beta and gamma). XRD has also been used in the determination of identity and amount of pretreatment on metal or in general, crystalline coatings on substrate. XRD also finds use in identifying coating defects. XRF can act as a supporting tool to XRD and can be useful in determination of various elements used in coatings in wider range from ppm to 100%. Both XRD and XRF are useful in coating industry as research, quality control and problem analysis tool. Although these techniques are expensive, their simplicity of operations, speed and ability to give selective information make them a very powerful analytical tool for study of coatings. It has several advantages over conventional paint application methods, the most important one being the control of pollution, since water is the main solvent used in the process in place of toxic organic solvents. Both anodic and cathodic processes have been developed, but the latter has clear cut advantages over the former, because, in cathodic process, the substrate dissolution can be avoided, which helps in eliminating the threat of coating discoloration and also the bath instability. Epoxy resins are well known for their corrosion protective properties. In the present work, water soluble epoxy resin is prepared by modifying with amine for getting cathodic systems. The resin, on dissolution in water by adding organic acids, could be cathodically deposited. The studies made with the cathodic epoxy resin with and without pigmentation and also the evaluation of the electrocoating are detailed in this paper.
