For example, they are inappropriate to completely recover the chromium in the case of waste waters from the tanning process. Chromium can be recovered (by precipitation) from effluents that contain high concentrations of this metal. However, effluents from the later stages in present day tanning process often have a low concentration of chromium that cannot be recovered and is found in the sludge of the waste water treatment plant (WWTP). The aim of our research is to recover and reuse the chromium (III) from post-tanning effluents by means of a biotechnological sequestering method using acidophilic fungi. In this study, we tested acidophilic fungi capable to grow in the presence of chromium in waste waters from various stages of a real post-tanning process. When the post-tanning process was carried out on a pilot plant scale in which conventional rechroming and neutralization stages were undertaken and the use of additional chemicals was avoided, chromium (III) sequestration values of above 95% were obtained. As these results are so promising, further studies will focus on searching for more resistant fungal strains and determining which of the chemicals used in the post-tanning process can be avoided or replaced by alternatives. Langues : Américain (ame) Tags : Décorine Protéoglycane 'Enzymes protéolytiques' 'Dépilage oxydant' 'Hydroxyde de sodium' Percarbonate Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Décorin is a minor proteoglycan (part protein and part carbohydrate) of the skin that is among the key components that undergo changes and removal during conversion of hides to leather. The majority of décorin removal takes place during the dehairing of hides, either traditionally with sodium sulfide or by an alternative oxidative dehairing procedure. The oxidative dehairing method using sodium hydroxide and percarbonate, developed by Marmer and Dudley, was utilized. Further removal of décorin by exposure to proteolytic enzymes during pretanning was explored to study the effects on the quality of leather. Additional removal of décorin was observed when an alkaline protease was added during the reliming stage and pepsin was added during the pickling stage in the pretanning treatments of the hides. More pronounced improvement in leather quality, due to more decorin removed, was observed in oxidatively dehaired hides than those dehaired traditionally with sulfides. As the décorin content decreased, the leather product became softer, more stretchable, and tougher than the control leather tanned without adding proteolytic enzymes. Employing the alternative oxidative dehairing process can solve the problem of sulfide toxicity to the environment while at the same time improving the quality of leather if co-treated with proteolytic enzymes. Despite the fact that the testing of sorption/desorption behavior is time consuming, the application of a Dynamic Vapor Sorption analyzer enabled us to characterize the sorption/desorption behavior of materials in a relatively short time. Differences in sorption and desorption can be related to the accessibility and internal tortuosity of the materials. BET and GAB models were used to analyze variations in monolayer sorption capacity (internal sorption surface) of different forms of collagen (hide powder and leather). Variations in the energy constants related to primary and secondary sorption were also considered. Given that tests in desorption were performed, the BET and GAB models were also fitted to desorption and the differences observed in the parameters were analyzed. A model of sorption-desorption for porous materials was devised to account for the differences between sorption and desorption. Qualitative tests indicate that the tannins of cashew nut kernel husks are mainly condensed type while those of groundnut husks are mixed tannins. UV spectra of the tannins implied that ellagitannins was present in the groundnut husks whereas the tannins of cashew nut husks contain cyanidin, quercetin, and delphinidin, among others. Chromatographic separation of the hydrolysed tannins also detected other components. Quantitative determination showed about 19.9 - 22.1 percent tannins in the husks of cashew nut and about 5.7 - 7.5 percent tannins in the husks of groundnut. Potential applications of the extracts as tanning and re-tanning agents in the production of shoe upper leathers have also been investigated.
