(Wikipedia)
Spectrométrie de masseIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - OBJECTIVE : Scalp hair is among the most exposed parts of the human body, yet the impact of visible and UV light on hair lipids, an important structural component of hair, is poorly researched. We have used lipidomics, a broad-based approach to measure lipids in samples, which has hitherto not been applied to UV-exposed hair in the published literature, and could allow for a wider understanding of how UV light impacts on specific hair lipids.
- METHODS : Mixed blonde Caucasian hair switches were divided into two groups of five, with half of the hair switches exposed to UV and visible light mimicking normal daytime exposure and half left unexposed. LC–MS lipidomics was used to profile the lipids in the hair samples.
- RESULTS : A total of 791 lipids and 32 lipid classes with tentative identifications were detected in the hair samples. Nineteen lipid classes and 397 lipids differed between UV-treated and non-treated hair. The main lipid classes that differed were vitamin A fatty acid esters, sterol esters, several ceramides, mono-, di- and triglycerides, phosphatidylethanolamines (all decreased in UV-exposed hair) and bismonoacylglycerolphosphates, acylcarnitines and acylglycines (all increased in UV-exposed hair). Most detected lipids were decreased in UV-exposed hair, supporting earlier work that has found that UV exposure causes oxidation of lipids which would result in a decrease in most lipid classes.
- CONCLUSION : Light exposure to hair has a widespread impact on the hair lipidome. This study also adds to the emerging literature on the hair lipidome, broadening the range of lipid classes reported in hair.Note de contenu : - METHODS : Hair samples - UV treatment - Sample preparation - LC–MS lipidomics analysis

Tests de sécuritéIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : A 2-year sampling campaign was realized on French Mediterranean beach (Palavas-les-Flots Hérault) in order to measure the concentration of UV filters released from the sunscreen used by bathers. Multiple factors suspected of playing determining roles in the UV filter pattern in water were explored, such as the seasonal and daily time evolutions, or the vertical and horizontal distributions, and they were regarded through the UV filter characteristics.
- Methods : The beach was monitored during periods of high and low tourist attendance, typically before, during and after the summer peak. The beachgoers attendance was counted. Bathing water was sampled distinctly from the bulk column and from the top surface layer, testing different sampling tools. Sediments and mussels were also sampled and analysed as potential UV filter sinks. Three organic UV filters (octocrylene OCR, avobenzone BMDBM and octyl methoxycinnamate OMC) and one mineral (titanium dioxide TiO2) were studied here as representatives of the current cosmetic market.
- Results : Summer peak attendance on the beach was confirmed associated with peak levels of UV filter concentration in the bathing water, even more pronounced during a heat wave period. This relation was also observed at day scale with an afternoon peak, suggesting a rapid evolution of the UV filter pattern in water. Contrasted fates were measured between the four studied UV filters, that could be mainly explained by their respective characteristics, i.e. particulate or dissolved, hydrophilic or lipophilic, lifetime. Generally, this resulted in a concentration ranking TiO2 > OCR > OMC > BMDBM, ranging from 0.5 to 500 μg/L. The most lipophilic and recalcitrant OCR was found most vertically differentiated and over concentrated in the top surface layer of water. Finally, a large horizontal heterogeneity was also observed in the UV filter concentration pattern, raising the need for sample replicates that cover a significant area.
- Conclusion : This work fulfils some knowledge gaps on the issue of UV filter release in coastal environments, not only by providing original field data and methodological recommendations but also importantly in the comparison made of organic and mineral UV filters, which are often considered separately and rarely evaluated at the same time.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Study site: Palavas-les-Flots Beach - Sampling methods - Geographical recordings - Water analysis - Polypropylene sorbent sheet analysis - Sediment analysis - Mussel analysis

Nanoparticles have shown a positive development due to its own various properties, functionalities and its applications in Cosmetics. One example where consumer expectations grow and the demand increases are UV protectors or sun creams. It was concluded that nanoparticles can be used in cosmetics like sunscreen to increase UV protection and prevent bacteria growth simultaneously. The available products are characterized by advantages and disadvantages of the various UV protection factors, and so far, no single material combines all desired properties. Nanotechnology shows an advantage character as it can be used to change the properties of the finely produced nanoparticles and influences products from various sectors as well as industries for a wide variety of applications, UV protection being amongst them. Spectroscopie de réflectanceIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - OBJECTIVE : Photography can be a powerful tool for researching the skin. Moving outside the visible spectrum and into the ultra violet (UV) presents a unique set of challenges to the skin photographer because of the restrictions imposed by the equipment being used. This article discusses these challenges in relation to camera sensitivity, lens and filter transmission and lighting spectrum, with the aim of demystifying what is actually being captured when imaging skin.
- METHODS : In addition to a discussion of existing data on the subject of camera sensor sensitivity, filter transmission and flash spectral analysis, transmission in the UV of a variety of camera lenses using a new method has been carried out.
- RESULTS : Using the described approach, lens transmission between 280 and 420 nm of a range of lenses has been measured. Combining this with camera sensor sensitivity data and filter and light source characteristics, it has been possible to determine an overall, harmonized, spectral sensitivity curve for what is being imaged with a given setup.
- CONCLUSIONS : UV reflectance photography, while a powerful tool, is often misunderstood and misreported as to what is actually being imaged. By combining measurements on camera sensitivity, lens and filter transmission and light source spectra the researcher can more fully understand what is they are actually measuring, thereby enabling better communication with the consumer on what they are seeing and a more complete description for any claims support.Note de contenu : - Factors to consider during equipment choice
