The two methods have been acknowledged greatly and extensively studied because of their feasibility in manipulating the properties of poly(pyrrole) according to the desired application. However, chemical oxidation method is considered the best method for the preparation of poly(pyrrole) in larger quantities. There are other methods through which poly(pyrrole) can be synthesized such as plasma polymerization and photopolymerization, which have so far received less attention in the literature. For this paper, chemical oxidation was used to prepare poly(pyrrole) by oxidizing pyrrole with CuCl2 under different emulsifying conditions. The surfactants used were sodium dodecyl sulfate and/or p-toluenesulfonic acid. Additionally, photopolymerization was also exploited to prepare poly(pyrrole) under similar emulsifying conditions. In this method, poly(pyrrole) was synthesized with the oxidizing ability of AgNO3 under UV radiation. All samples were investigated by Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Scanning electron microscope was used to compare the morphological differences, which occurred due to different experimental conditions. The thermal stability was studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). On most size scales tested, the polyurethane possessed superior scratch and mar resistance. The polyurethane also possessed improved scratch recovery after warming for 2 h at 60°C. After 2000 h of accelerated weathering, the scratch recovery characteristics of the polyurethane were largely maintained, while the acrylic/melamine/silane showed a significant drop in scratch recovery performance. Performance of both coatings was related to T g, hardness, and crosslink density. UV-dried coatings containing a weight fraction of Triclosan as low as 0.001 submitted to tests for antimicrobial activity evaluation with Escherichia coli colonies have shown the complete elimination of living bacteria in the thin liquid layer in contact with the film surface. A persistent biocide activity can also be observed after a prolonged water treatment of the coating. The biocide release from the coating has been studied through contact with water–ethanol mixtures of different compositions. The maximum release rate has been observed at an ethanol weight fraction of 0.85, where the crosslinked films show the maximum swelling. The phenomena can be explained on the basis of the interaction between the liquid and the polymer network through the Hansen solubility parameters. Diacrylate monomers prepared from this unique diol, and containing less than 15 wt% trans-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol diacrylate, are liquid at room temperature and readily soluble in other acrylate monomers and oligomers (in contrast to diacrylates prepared from 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, which are solid). More importantly, UV-cured coatings based on (cis,trans)-1,3/1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol diacrylates (1,3/1,4-CHDMDA) show superior hardness, scratch resistance, and chemical resistance as compared to common diacrylate monomers used in the UV coating industry such as tripropylene glycol diacrylate, hexanediol diacrylate, dipropylene glycol diacrylate, and propoxylated neopentyl glycol diacrylate. Thus, this new monomer appears to be a promising material for enhancing the performance of radiation-cured coatings, inks, and adhesives applied to a variety of substrates, including plastic, paper, wood, metal, and glass. This paper will summarize the synthesis of liquid diacrylates from (cis,trans)-1,3/1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, as well as the performance properties of the corresponding UV-cured coatings. In this study, PUDs were prepared as aqueous dispersions using a new highly versatile crosslinkable anionomer, 2-acrylamido 2 methylpropanesulfonic acid (ATBS), which is commercially available, yet not explored by the coating industry. The influence of this novel anionomer on the performance properties of polyurethane resins was evaluated by comparing performance/properties of this newly synthesized PUD with dispersion based on conventional anionomer, DMPA. Analyses of their physico-chemical and thermo-mechanical properties revealed that PUD based on ATBS showed comparatively much better thermal, mechanical, and chemical and coating properties than the PUD based on DMPA anionomer. Similarly, brush/roller application of the paints in an enclosed space generated airborne isocyanate concentrations <3 µg/m3. The dust generated during light sanding of the polyurethane paint, 24 h after curing, did not show detectable levels of isocyanates. The diffusion of water through the coating plays an essential role in the performance and endurance of the coating. This study focuses on the evaluation of water diffusion through polyurethane coatings. The effects of thickness and ambient temperature on water diffusion through polyurethane, which is coated on mild steel and immersed in 3.5% (weight fraction) NaCl solution, are evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Experimental observations clearly indicate that the water diffusion coefficient strongly depends on service temperature and the thickness of coating. Higher temperature (lower than T g) increases water uptake of the polymer but no measurable changes were observed for the temperature change studied. EIS results show that the mechanism of corrosion does not change in the range of thicknesses and temperature investigated in this study. The products are characterized by a high degree of self-assembling of the matrix which was prepared from an epoxy-functional organosilicon precursor and an oligomeric diamine. Unmodified and chemically modified montmorillonite, bentonite, laponite, and colloidal silica were used as nanofillers, differing in shape, size, and origin. The nanoadditive concentration in coatings was always 0.5 wt%. Solid-state NMR (13C and 29Si CP/MAS) spectroscopy was used for estimation of polyaddition and polycondensation degree in the polymer matrix in order to evaluate its structure changes caused by interaction with the nanoadditives. The influence of the kind of additive on the dynamic mechanical properties, gas permeability, and surface properties (topography, roughness) is discussed. The coating processes were investigated by various factors in single-factor tests, and the products were tested by oil absorption value and whiteness. The results show that the optimum compound pigments reach a whiteness of 94.0% and an oil absorption value of 35.5 mL/100 g. The products were further characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and zeta potential analyzer. The XRD analysis indicates that the microstructure of the coating on a kaolin substrate is mainly anatase. Transmission electron microscopy images clearly reveal that the layer of TiO2 consists of randomly oriented small particles with no agglomeration outside the kaolin surface. A trimethoxysilane-functional quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) was used to modify the polysiloxane matrix. A comparison of the mechanical properties of coatings containing QAS modification to analogous coatings without QAS modification showed that QAS modification resulted in a dramatic improvement in mechanical properties of silica nanoparticle-reinforced coatings. QAS modification provided major enhancements in both tensile modulus and toughness. The coatings were characterized using positron annihilation spectroscopy, photo-acoustic FT-IR, differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscope, and atomic force microscopy. The characterization results suggested that the QAS moieties present in the polysiloxane matrix undergo specific interactions with the surface of silica nanoparticles enabling an enhancement in interfacial adhesion between the polymer matrix and the nanoparticles. Most likely, the specific interaction that provided the enhanced mechanical properties was an ion–dipole interaction involving silanol groups present on the surface of the silica nanoparticles. The enhanced modulus and toughness of these polysiloxane materials may enable their application as a fouling-release coating for ship hulls, since current polysiloxane-based fouling release coatings suffer from poor mechanical properties and durability. The phase composition, microhardness, and antiabrasion properties of the coating were investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a Vickers microhardness tester, and block-on-ring abrasive equipment. The abrasion mechanism of TiN-matrix coating under dry abrasion conditions was also discussed. The results indicate that the composition of the coating is main phases of TiN and TiN0.3, minor phases of Ti2O3, and TiO2. The TiN-matrix coating possesses high microhardness and relatively good toughness. Furthermore, the friction coefficient of the coating decreases with the increment of applied load. The interstratified distribution of titanium oxides can act as a solid lubricant during the wear test. The main abrasion mechanism of the TiN-matrix coating is adhesion wear. In addition, the coating with self-lubricating property can improve the antiwear property of the substrate significantly. The electrical conductivity and the transparency of CO2-laser-treated ITO nanoparticle coatings were characterized with regard to the application as transparent electrodes. Furthermore, the stability of the electrical conductivity under oscillatory bending was investigated. A specific resistance of 0.12 Ω cm is obtained by CO2-laser treatment without thermally damaging the PET film. The improvement of the electrical conductivity can be explained by a slight sinter neck formation. For a film thickness of 3 μm, a sheet resistance of 400 Ω/â–¡ and a transmission in the visible range of 80 % were achieved. The stability of the electrical conductivity of CO2-laser-treated ITO nanoparticle coatings under bending was investigated using a specially constructed device for the application of various oscillatory bending loads. For a bending radius of 10 mm, the sheet resistance does not exceed 1000 Ω/â–¡ after 300 bending cycles. Compared to commercial sputtered ITO coatings, CO2-laser-treated ITO nanoparticle coatings show a significant higher stability under oscillatory bending.
