Tannage Résumé : In the present investigation, a cleaner and eco-friendly method to leather tanning process based on a novel pre-tanning agent (Q16) has been developed. Q16 was synthesized by cyanuric chloride and p-aminobenzoic acid, then detected by Fourier transform infrared (FUR). The combination tannage process of Q16 and chrome (Q16-Cr) was optimized. In comparison with combination tannage of. F-90-Cr and traditional chrome tanning methods, the physico-chemical characteristics including shrinkage temperature, rnechanical properties and organoleptic properties of the tanned leather were analyzed, the micro-morphology of grain surface and cross section which reflect the dispersion and texture of fibre were evaluated. The distribution of chromium in the cross section was detected by Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX), and the chromium concentration was also determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (AES-ICP). The results are shown that the Q16-Cr-tanned leather has better tanning performance even than chrome-tanned leather. The grain surface is smoother and the collagen fibres are well-dispersed. The Q16-Cr tanning method irnproves the absorption degree of chromium, and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is significantly reduced. Hence, this cleaner non-salt pickling method for less chrome tanning process encourages the sustainable development of leather industry and cleaner production.

Due to economics and efficiency, it has become the traditional method of hide preservation used by meat packers, hide processors and tanners worldwide. But brine curing is known to cause serious effluent pollution problems in the environment. The main objective of the current study was to develop an alternative brining process that requires less salt to effectively preserve bovine hides by incorporating dehydrating agents. In low salt preservation, the anticipated hardening effect due to over dehydration caused by polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers was compensated by adding crude glycerol and sodium carbonate. Low molecular weight PEGs were more effective than high molecular weight polymers. Preservation was found to be effective because no sign of putrefaction was observed in alternatively cured hides, and the properties of these hides were comparable to those of traditionally preserved hides. When PEG was incorporated, the salt concentration required for hide preservation could be reduced. Tannage synthétiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In a previous paper a Low Salt Preservation (LSP) method of preserving New Zealand and Australian sheepskins was described and compared to the existing High Salt Preservation (HSP) method. The HSP method uses large amounts of sodium chioride plus combinations of biocides which are not registered in REACH regulations. In the previous trial the Australian skins were stacked flat with wool side against pelt side which caused some mildew to develop in the wool. In this trial using LSP, the skins were stacked in the conventional manner by folding down the back bone, flank to flank with the wool side out. The LSP process used 73% less salt than HSP and uses additives widely used in the food and beverage industries. No wool slip was found in the LSP preserved skins compared to 5% wool slip in the HSP skins and no mildewed areas were found in the LSP skins. These results confirm the efficacy of the LSP process. When finished as rugs there was more ‘wool tip colour’ on some LSP skins compared to HSP. If the wool tip is removed by shearing the underlying wool colour is the same for both LSP and HSP. Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The addition of large amounts of salt is one of the most important environmental problems in the dyeing of cellulosic fibres with direct or reactive dyes. This study was undertaken to determine an accurate and effective method for measuring the impact of salt on the dyeing process. This method has been applied to the case of CI Direct Blue 90 by utilising real-time measurements of dye exhaustion for different salt and dye concentrations. Reductions in salt by a factor of 4 were achieved with no effect on the final shade. It is proposed that this method could be used to reduce the amount of salt for many other direct dyes, or to enable the dyer to quantify the trade-off between time to final exhaustion and salt addition.
