However, some companies continue to be reluctant to use paints of this type to protect steel against atmospheric corrosion. Part of this reluctance may be attributed to low confidence, mainly due to a lack of knowledge of the performance of water-borne paint systems compared with traditional organic solvent-based paint systems. This paper presents results of experimental studies and includes technical considerations on the anticorrosive performance of paint systems using water-borne or solvent-borne paints when exposed to atmospheres with different degrees of corrosivity. On the basis of the practical results and the considerations presented in this paper, it may be stated that water-borne paint systems are currently available which present excellent anticorrosive behaviour, even in highly corrosive atmospheres. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Waterproofing is important in protecting the structure and ensuring that the structure is usable over its service life. The forces exerted by water are enormous and its effects are unpredictable. Water proofing may be defined as the prevention of water penetration into or th rough dry concrete. It may be required where there is a hydrostatic head of water to be resisted, or where unusually dry conditions must be maintained.
On the other hand, damp proofing may be defined as the treatment of concrete or mortar to retard the passage or absorption of water or water vapour, either by application of a suitable coating to exposed surfaces, or by use of a suitable admixture or treated cernent. As the definition indicates, damp proofing will not prevent the passage or absorption of water. It only reduces the rate of penetration of water into dry concrete, or rate of transmission of water through concrete.Note de contenu : - CONCRETE WATER PROOFING COMPOUNDS : Chemical types used in each category are summarized - Materials which react with cement hydration products - Material which coalesce on contact with cement hydration products - Finely divided form of hydrophobic materials

Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Most of the resins used in the cathodic electrodeposition (CED) coatings are made from modified epoxy resin and blocked polyisocyanate in which the cross linking is achieved by polyurethane and polyurea formation. A resin system has been developed that is isocyanate free and avoids not only the toxicity aspect, but also, to a great extent, the weight loss of the coating upon baking. And research work has been carried out to explore new isocyanate-free curing chemistry for the CED coatings. Thus, the curing of epoxy resins via ring opening reaction between glycidyl groups (homopolymerization) can be readily done using tertiary amines. A resin system containing both epoxy groups and tertiary amine groups was prepared and upon neutralization of the tertiary amine groups with formic acid, it made the resin water-compatible as well as suitable for cathodic deposition. After deposition this tertiary amine groups catalyze the curing via homopolymerization. Note de contenu : - Epoxy-amine waterborne adduct

It was he who, more than forty years ago, prepared waterborne stoving paints whose quality was accepted by the industry. These anionic resins have since been greatly improved. Modern binders are noted for the fact that they do not exhibit viscosity anomalies and that they are substantially free from solvents. Note de contenu : - Free carboxyl groups impart water stability
