Non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) is a novel kind of polyurethane prepared by reaction of cyclo-carbonates and amines without use of toxic isocyanates.NIPU has attracted increasing attention because of its improvements in porosity, water absorption, thermal and chemical resistance over conventional polyurethanes. Conventional polyurethanes involve the use of isocyanates, which require hazardous and toxic phosgene for their manufacture. These monomers cannot be man ufactured without elaborate safety devices and h uge investment. Isocyanates are also considerably toxic and sensitive to moisture. Growing global awareness, Need to protect our environment and continually strive to ensure the safety, health and well-being of those in the industry and consumers has created a demand for environment-friendly products. Their potential technological applications include chemical-resistant coating, sealants, foam, etc. This review orbits around the syntheses of different kinds of NIPU, the reaction mechanism, and application of different kinds of NIPU in coatings. |
