This article explains and puts into perspective the new technologies available for applications in hospitals and care homes.
Much has been written or presented about antimicrobial systems for surface application and many of the claims seem overrated 'the answer to MRSA' etc. The objective of this paper is to review and put into perspective the several technologies available today for applications in hospitals and care homes. Fully embedded systems and surface coated systems will be defined and described, their mode of action explained and their benefits considered. Test methods for evaluating and comparing different technologies wiil be discussed and indications given of the possible place for antimicrobial coatings in infection control programmes. |
