Résumé : |
Curing, crosslinking and vulcanization are all terms used to describe the process of forming chemical bonds between polymer chains in order to alter the properties of the polymer. In rubber compounds crosslinking allows the article being produced to hold its shape and imparts the desired degree of strength and durability to the final product. The actual properties obtained are directly related to the number and the type of bonds formed per unit volume of elastomer. Crosslinking is also often employed in the manufacture of pressure sensitive adhesives to increase shear adhesion, cohesive strength and resistance to elevated temperatures and solvents.
The curing of various elastomers by a variety of techniques is generally well understood. There is, however, a dearth of information in the literature on the crosslinking of pressure sensitive adhesives. Also, pressure sensitive adhesive systems employ large amounts of tackifiers and plasticizers, and the effect of these ingredients on the cure mechanism and the final properties is virtually unknown. This paper will examine the role of tackifiers in cured pressure sensitive adhesives and suggest some analytical approaches that can help ensure tackifier uniformity and adhesive quality and performance. |
