In service Navy aircraft which incorporate extensive composite structure, though, are often subject to impact related damage resulting in various defects in the components which need to be repaired. Bonded patch repair processes are a preferred field repair solution (versus bolted repairs) as the resulting repair joint can obtain the stiffness and strength of the original part skin if performed correctly. Obtaining quality bonded repair joints becomes increasingly difficult, though, as the complex curvature of the part increases, even when using wet layup, fabric based laminate patches. This preliminary study evaluates the benefits of utilizing a new aligned, discontinuous "formable" textile called DiscoTex® (in development by Pepin Associates) for producing laminate patches for bonded repairs on select double curvature composite shapes typical of those geometries found on fixed wing fighter aircraft. Langues : Américain (ame) Tags : 'Matériaux renforcés' Composites 'Renfort textile 3D' 'Industrie aérospatiale' 'Propriétés mécaniques' 'Textiles à usages techniques' Index. décimale : 677 Textiles Résumé : Three-dimensional (3D) woven, braided and knitted fabric preforms have been used as composites reinforcement for several decades with varying succes. Specific advantages and disadvantages of each of them have been extensively discussed in the literature. recently, the practical interest in these materials started growing again owed to intensive search for alternative "Out-of-autoclave" manufacturing technologies by the aircraft manufacturers. This paper first briefly reviews three primary approaches to producing 3D reinforcements for composites (stitching, Z-pinning, and using unitary 3D textile preforms). The discussion is focused on principal benefits and shortcomings of each of these approaches. Then, we analyse in a greater detail the method of 3D weaving in general and its two distinct types, 3D interlock weaving and 3D orthogonal non-crimp weaving, individually. The very different fiber architectures, although the distinctions are rarely made and both fabric types are commonly categorized as "3D woven fabrics". Further on, those major distinctions in the fiber architectures of the two types of 3D woven fabrics are converted into dramatically different properties of resulting composite. Specific comparative test data for carbon fiber composites reinforced with 3D orthogonal non-crimp weaves, 3D interlock weaves and plied 2D plain weaves illustrate this point on various in-plane and out-of-plane mechanical properties of mutually comparable composites. A summary of recent efforts in industrial manufacturing of 3D orthogonal non-crimp woven preforms using various high-modulus, brittle (like ceramic andpitch carbon) fibers complete the paper. Titre : Creating 3-D, one piece, wovencarbon preforms using conventional weaving and shedding Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Christopher McHugh, Auteur Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : p. 33-41 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Tags : Préformes 'Textiles à usages techniques' 3D' 'Structures tissés' 'Fibre de carbone' Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The main objective of this technical article is to demonstrate how 3-D carbon fabrics can be commercially manufactured using current design and manufacturing methods. Many fabric forming methods exist to manufacture 3-D structures, each with their own advantages. Bespoke machines have been developed to lay fibers in 3 or more directions and are keen to be called true 3-D weaving machines. Other methods of creating 3-D composites also have been widely publicized including multi-axial fiber tow laying, braiding, knitting and non-woven, however the inherent processing methods also their limitations when processing carbon fiber. During the course of this article items for discussion will include the need for a range of products to be developed without the need for many specialist fabric forming methods. By using conventional machinery it is possible to move to the next level of composite manufacture by creating one piece woven structures. These structures can be transported easily then expanded to create many forms, eliminating the need for multiple layup of carbon fibers.
