In order to ensure optimum performance of painted metal, the metal surface is usually modified by applying a pre-treatment. The resulting conversion coating improves paint adhesion and reduces the tendency for corrosion to occur beneath the paint .
Chromium based pre-treatments have been used quite extensively with good sucess. They promote paint adhesion inhibit corrosion and are cost-effective . Howewer environmental concerns and the health risks associated with the handling of chromium, particulary in its hexavalent oxidation state, have led to efforts to develop more benign alternatives . A major advance in reducing exposure of the workforce and discharge into the environment was the introduction of dried-in-place or no-rinse chrome treatments. Theoretically, all of the chromium is consumed in forming the pre-treatment coating none leaves the plant in the waste stream.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Pre-treatment and substrate preparation - Paint performance testing - Electrochimical testing - Compositional information
