Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : An analytical and experimental study of the transient flow behavior of polymer melt in injection molding is presented. The polymer volume flow rate into a rectangular mold cavity during the filling stage was determined using the Reynold's transport theory. The analysis, which neglects melt elasticity, shows that the flow rate is transient during the initial filling of the cavity. Moreover, the cavity flow rate was found to depend on material compressibility and expansivity, total volume upstream of the gate as well as time rate of change of melt pressure and temperature. Experimental results obtained through direct flow visualization are in good agreement with the theory. The effect of gate size on the cavity flow rate was also examined. A small gate gives rise to a greater degree of melt compressibility in the runner system. The prediction of actual flow rates into the cavity not only enhances determination of the interrelationship of flow rate, morphology, and properties in injection molding but also aids in the avoidance of molding defects. The results of this study can be used to improve the accuracy of CAE analysis. DOI : 10.3139/217.1601 Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=15836

Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5847

ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The tubing extrusion-forming process of a fluoropolymer (FEP) melt was studied both experimentally and numerically. The flow behaviour of a FEP resin was determined by using a tubular die used in industrial-scale operations and these data were compared with simulation results using (i) a viscous model (Cross) and (ii) a viscoelastic one (the Kaye – Bernstein, Kearsley, Zapas / Papanastasiou, Scriven, Macosko or K-BKZ/PSM model) in order to assess the viscoelastic effects. In all simulations, compressibility, thermal and pressure effects on viscosity were taken into account. It was found that the viscoelastic results for the pressure, and hence the stresses at the wall, were always higher than the viscous results. Both were higher than the experimental results. A quadratic slip model plus viscoelasticity was found necessary to reproduce the experiments. The smooth flow curves resulting from this industrial tubular-coating die are a further manifestation that this is an appropriate design for coating fluoropolymers at very high apparent shear rates, exceeding 5 000 s–1. Polyéthylène basse densité linéaireIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The bubble stability of tubular film extrusion in metallocene linear low density polyethylene(m-LLDPE) and metallocene linear low density polyethylene/linear low density polyethylene( m-LLDPE/LLDPE) blend was investigated. Unstable bubble characteristics in m-LLDPE were found at low draw down ratio (DR) with a symmetric periodic bubble instability at low blow up ratio (BUR) and a helical instability at high blow up ratio. However, m-LLDPE showed better operation windows in tubular film extrusion than that of LLDPE, especially in bubble instability at low BUR. Both bubble instability and helical instability in LLDPE tubular film extrusion were enhanced by the blending with m-LLDPE. m-LLPE possesses higher melt elasticity as compared to m-LLDPE and LLDPE due to the long chain branching introduced by 1-octene co-monomer during polymerization. Blending resulted in broadening of molecular weight distribution (MWD) and thus increase in activation energy. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The compounding of wood flour filled polyethylene is discussed with reference to co-rotating twin-screw extruders from two manufacturers. An acrylic acid-grafted polyethylene (PE-HD-AA) copolymer was used as the compatibilizer in high density polyethylene wood flour (PE-HD/WF) composite system. Special consideration was given to the compounding of the heat- and shear-sensitive wood flour. The relevant screw configuration was found to consist of short mixing length with low intensity of shearing. A suitable combination of processing variables was necessary for limiting the thermal degradation of the wood filler, however, tensile properties of the composites were not affected much. Furthermore, the allowable range of processing temperature was limited and there was an upper bound of rotating speed and a lower bound of throughput rate within which the darkening of wood filler in the composites was acceptable. The processing window was also experimentally constructed in terms of the degree of darkening of wood composites.
