Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The effects of wood flour and plasticizer on the rheology and extrusion of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) based wood-plastic composites are investigated. The intention of the study was to determine an optimal pair of PVC based wood-plastic composites that should exhibit substantially different rheological behaviors so that patterns similar to grain of wood can be developed inside and on the surface of the product when two selected wood-plastic compounds are extruded at once. The rheological study reveals that the shear viscosity and shear thinning behavior of the composites can be controlled by varying the contents of wood flour and plasticizer. It is also found that the depression of glass transition temperature due to the addition of plasticizer is substantially reduced by the loading of wood flour. In addition, various wood-plastic composites were compounded into different colors, and several pairs of the compounds with different rheological properties were extruded in single and twin screw extruders to see whether any wood-patterns are developed. When the differences in the shear viscosity and the glass transition temperature of the two compounds were too large, the incomplete plasticization of the higher viscosity component was observed due to the premature plasticization of the lower viscosity component. It is shown that distinct wood-patterns were developed both inside and on the surface of the extruded products only for the pairs of the composites with an optimal differences in both viscosity and plasticizer content. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : This paper investigates the viscosity behavior of melt polymer during the plastication stage in an injection molding machine (IMM). The objective of this paper is to develop theoretical viscosity-based models for evaluating and predicting the bulk viscosity of the melt polymer near the tip of the screw during the plastication stage. The uniqueness of these models is that they include the effects of material properties and machine processing parameters, such as screw rotational speed, hydraulic back pressure, barrel pressure drop, melt pressure and melt temperature. Several open loop tests were conducted on an industrial IMM in order to quantify process parameter effects on the plastication cycle. The derived model was used to predict bulk viscosity using the open loop tests data. The viscosity-based models in this work will be used for developing future optimal controllers for controlling the polymer viscosity during the plastication stage of the injection molding cycle. UltrasonsIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : We report on the development of a novel non-invasive ultrasonic measurement system for determining the melting behavior in a single-screw plasticization unit (35/22D) and on a modified drag-induced melt removal model that builds upon that by Tadmor and Gogos (2006). The solid bed to melt pool ratio is quantified using a non-invasive ultrasonic system based on reflection measurements. Automated analysis of the reflected pulses – measured at different axial positions along the barrel – allows the melting process to be monitored online. Our analysis of the delay section incorporates viscous dissipation into Tadmor's drag-induced melt removal model. We link temperature profile and melt film thickness via differential equations and consider viscous dissipation. By segmenting the delay section in the axial direction, the temperature dependency of the thermo-physical material properties is also considered. Using the melting behavior measured for different materials, we verified the mathematical model. Additionally, the effect of reduced screw length on the plasticization process, important for the injection molding process, was investigated. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : 1. Materials - 2. Polyesters
