PolyhydroxyalcanoatesLes polyhydroxyalcanoates ou PHAs sont des polyesters biodégradables produits naturellement par fermentation bactérienne de sucres ou lipides. Ils sont produits par les bactéries en tant que stockage de carbone et d'énergie. Le terme polyhydroxyalcanoate regroupe plus de 150 monomères différents qui conduisent à des propriétés parfois très différentes. Ces polymères peuvent ainsi présenter des propriétés thermoplastiques ou d'élastomères avec des points de fusion allant de 40 à 180°C.

Matières plastiques -- Industrie -- Aspect de l'environnementIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Sur le marché depuis plus d'une décennie, les bioplastiques sont encore à la recherche d'un rythme de croisière. Les capacités se développent encore timidement, faute d'un contexte économique et réglementaire nettement favorable à leur mise sur le marché. Les applications spécifiques à ces nouveaux matériaux sont encore trop restreintes pour permettre de générer des volumes suffisants.
Pourtant, sur le papier, les bioplastiques, et principalement leurs variantes biodégradables, permettent de rêver à un environnement dans lequel les pollutions liées aux plastiques seraient sous contrôle. Les débats qui s'ouvriront, en novembre, dans le cadre de la conférence internationale COP 21, aborderont nécessairement cette question. Deux aspects seront discutés : la réduction de l'empreinte carbone liée à la production des polymères et l'impact des déchets sur l'environnement.
Si sur le premier, l'impact des bioplastiques semble indéniable, l'effet des polymères biodégradables sur le second est encore sujet à caution, notamment en ce qui concerne la difficulté de mettre en place les filières adéquates. Une situation ubuesque pour des matériaux dont le principal intérêt est de faciliter le traitement en fin de vie des articles et emballages en plastiques.
Le secteur est cependant source de nombreuses innovations qui pourraient, à l'avenir apporter des solutions nouvelles.Note de contenu : - Un développement encore timide en France
