In this work, we aimed to obtain capsules smaller than 1 µm containing an appropriate amount of oil seeking to provide efficient self-healing. A modification in the route of synthesis of self-healing coating capsules is proposed. This modification of a typical synthesis route, which consisted of introducing an additional mechanical agitation step before adding a formaldehyde aqueous solution, was used to entrap linseed oil as a healing agent in poly(urea–formaldehyde). Hence, two synthesis routes were investigated: one involving mechanical agitation at high-speed rotation and another which combines mechanical and ultrasonic agitation. The capsules obtained by agitation had average sizes of 0.35 ± 0.13 and 0.37 ± 0.19 µm and an oil content of 80 ± 2.2 and 77 ± 1.7 wt%, respectively. Both were incorporated, separately, into an epoxy resin matrix, and the composite was applied onto ASTM A36 steel plates for evaluation of healing crack filling performance and accelerated corrosion testing. Scanning electron microscope images showed that the two coatings had a similar healing effect, mainly due to their similar estimated oil content. With a complete understanding of the condition of the existing slab, the surface can be repaired and prepared, and issues can be mitigated to comply with the requirements of the new flooring system. The flooring system manufacturer should be consulted when selecting repair materials and evaluating the surface to be coated. Note de contenu : - Flooring performance requirements

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this work a new optical technology, ASII, is presented, for the study of film formation from all kinds of dispersed systems, such as latexes, emulsions or solvent-borne suspensions. Various film-forming products have been investigated, including water-borne coatings, on various types of substrates. A wide range of information can be extracted such as objective drying times (dust-free, dry-hard times, etc) or mechanism taking place, thereby offering new possibilities to analyse film formation from complex colloidal systems. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Associatively acting thickeners are standard in the formulation of modern aqueous systems, such as paints and coatings, adhesives, etc. These are either the hydrophobic-modified acrylic thickeners, often called HASE, or the NiSAT group of products. The term NiSAT, which is often used for this class of associative thickeners, refers to 'NonIonic Synthetic Associative Thickeners'.
The HASE product group comprises ionic (mainly anionic) thickeners, which require proper pH adjustment for activation. This product group utilises two mechanisms : water thickening and associative.
The NiSAT product group, as mentioned, are already nonionic and in principle can be used over the widest range of pH values. These products represent an advanced product technology and are designed to give superior rheological characteristics so that many formulation requirements can be met. Depending on the product chosen, good levelling, spatter resistance, film build and flow characteristics can be achieved. The appearance of classic syneresis can even be minimised. Furthermore, NiSAT products do not need special activation, so the majority of them can be added to the letdown or even at the end of processing. This product class does not adversely affect the corrosion or water sensitivity of the resulting system, and other secondary parameters, such as gloss, will not be negatively influenced.Note de contenu : - Chemistry
