Titre : Inhibited aluminium vacuum metallised flakes for water-based inks and coatings Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Martin J. Fay, Auteur Année de publication : 2016 Article en page(s) : p. 38-39 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.4 Encres Résumé : VMF pigment is produced by stripping vacuum metallised aluminium from polymer film using a solvent, such as ethyl acetate. This is followed by several process steps that ultimately results in a 10% -20% solids dispersion (figure 2).
Prior to metallisation, the substrate film is coated with a 'release coating' designed to dissolve rapidly in the stripping solvent. Since there will be some residual release coating in the final product, the nature of the release coating can be important for compatibility and post treatment.
Controlling the thickness of the metallised flake is very important to maintain a consistent visuel effect. Flake thickness is typically between 100-400 angstroms. In practice, flake thickness is controlled by the optical density or surface resistivity of the metallised film.
As flake thickness decreases, the appearance becomes darker and the overall reflectivity increases. The greater reflectivity of thinner flakes can be attributed to less light scattering from the flakes edges. The scanning electron image in figure 3 illustrates typical flake dimensions.Note de contenu : - Manufacturing process

Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.4 Encres Résumé : Ink-jet printing technology has experienced dramatic advances in the last decade, and is widely used in small businesses and home offices because of its excellent resolution, low price, and brilliant multicolor output. The ink-jet process involves two distinct parts, the inks and their application, and the media surface. Improvements in ink-jetting technology and the corresponding improvement in image application resolution have caused waterfastness to become more limiting to the achieved resolution. Our research work attempts to improve waterfastness by incorporating cationically modified boehmites into paper coating formulations that interact more strongly with anionic dyes in the inks. Boehmites (gamma-AlOOH) were surface-modified using commercially available [N,N,N-trimethyl]-ammonium propyl-(trimethoxy)-silane salts in nonaqueous reactions. The modified boehmites were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, zeta potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and pore size analysis to assess the extent of modification and pore size effects. Aqueous, high pigment volume concentration paper coatings were then formulated from the boehmites and applied to paper substrates to assess the relative ability of the coatings to retain printed image dyes. The coatings were characterized for dispersion viscosity and gloss, while printed images on the coatings were tested by water spot, fixed dye, and water drip analyses. Coatings synthesized using the surface-modified pigments showed a reduced binder demand as well as improved image waterfastness and fixed-dye adsorption properties as compared to the unmodified boehmite coatings. Impression numériqueIndex. décimale : 667.4 Encres Résumé : Whilst inkjet technology is well-established on home and small office desktops and is now having increasing impact in commercial printing, it can also be used to deposit materials other than ink as individual droplets at a microscopic scale. This allows metals, ceramics, polymers and biological materials (including living cells) to be patterned on to substrates under precise digital control. This approach offers huge potential advantages for manufacturing, since inkjet methods can be used to generate structures and functions which cannot be attained in other ways.
Beginning with an overview of the fundamentals, this bookcovers the key components, for example piezoelectric print-heads and fluids for inkjet printing, and the processes involved. It goes on to describe specific applications, e.g. MEMS, printed circuits, active and passive electronics, biopolymers and living cells, and additive manufacturing. Detailed case studies are included on flat-panel OLED displays, RFID (radio-frequency identification) manufacturing and tissue engineering, while a comprehensive examination of the current technologies and future directions of inkjet technology completes the coverage.
With contributions from both academic researchers and leading names in the industry, Inkjet Technology for Digital Fabrication is a comprehensive resource for technical development engineers, researchers and students in inkjet technology and system development, and will also appeal to researchers in chemistry, physics, engineering, materials science and electronics.Note de contenu : 1.
